That's a lot of power, but the big question is what's the price and mass of that railgun. Mass is 688 t, cost is 32.5 Mc.

Probably needs to be polished more, but: turns out you can still use railguns to impart lots of delta v to small missiles. If you are willing to spend the relevant power. Here's a hafnia capacitor that stores 1.55 GJ, and, incidentally, a gun that launches nuclear micromissiles (3.6 kg) at almost 8 km/s: RemoteControlModule Default Remote Control Tall UsesCustomName true AspectRatio 8 HomingBehavior PropellantForBoostPhase_Percent 0.65 BoostPhase GuidanceLaw Augmented Proportional Navigation Accelerate true DampingEngineMultiplier 0.5 MidcoursePhase GuidanceLaw Augmented Proportional Navigation Accelerate false DampingEngineMultiplier 0.25 TerminalPhase GuidanceLaw Augmented Proportional Navigation Accelerate true DampingEngineMultiplier 1

Range is also reasonable, but the idea is that this is a missile that can adjust the trajectory some, and so should be fired at much longer ranges. I have so far tested in place of / paired up large laser ships. It's very satisfying to see a nuclear missile accelerating towards the enemy at those speeds. Have you tried a more conductive armature?

Have you tried a more conductive armature? Near these solutions / designs, they tend to not have enough tensile strength. But I will keep looking. Edit: and of course I find an improvement right after I post. Thanks, I will report once it stops improving.

I FINALLY MADE A FUNCTIONING COILGUN FROM SCRATCH!!! It's erm, kinda looks like the sniper coilgun except well, you know, WAY smaller. Also green, don't forget the green. But it still bring the issue of 'I cannot make good coilgun with more than one stage.' And well, iron is now just, useless. Attempt to make coilgun with iron armature that fire faster than 2 kmps has failed.

So, I think I finally figured how to make the new coilgun. And while iron is barely usable as cheap coilgun ammunition, nickel iron molybdenum is good for the job even if it's annoyingly expensive to a ridiculous level. But anyway, here's my prove my coilgun can still be simple to make and extremely light weight and competitive just like before. A incredibly light weight 1 gram coilgun with insane accuracy. Here's the schematic if you want one. Key to making a good coilgun seems to be using high density and high melting point, such as tungsten rhenium and osmium. Still have no idea to actually control the efficiency of the capacitor. It was so accurate and hit so damn hard that it easily sniped off turrets from a capital ships like nothing. And of course, since it needs so little power to run... Spamming them was easy.

Key to making a good coilgun seems to be using high density and high melting point, such as tungsten rhenium and osmium. I take it you didn't notice my tantalum hafnium carbide coil earlier. That seems to have the absolute best heat dissipation for coilguns. Regular tungsten is better than the rhenium alloy too (in reality rhenium is added to tungsten to make it more malleable, not desirable for guns).

TaHfC seems to have really poor beam deflection resistance, or low yield strength I guess, so you need thicker barrels. Tungsten drops a couple meter/sec in velocity but you can have much smaller barrels.

I love 1.10 . Suddenly the game became much more interesting. Here is what I've been working on for the last two days. Andarta is the offensive/gunship equivalent, armed with: 48 counter laser turrets , driven by 10 lasers (fps reasons - could easily be much more). Single 400MW laser with six turrets. 1200 small, fast, 13km/s, dual warhead missiles with external tanks. 300 similar missiles without the external tanks - to avoid the lag if I have to launch under fire. 60 small defensive laser drones - could be easily much more but I want to avoid giving the AI rope to hang my PC. I usually send a single drone towards the missile swarm and shoot the engines of the missiles as I pass by. 3 multifunctional small 15MW needle guns with around 41/42km/s. Single very accurate 100MW large needle gun with 100km/s at the bow. Certainly more speed and range is possible with a much larger gun and more power. This almost got under 300 tons and generally has a pretty descent turning speed for a large gun.
Minerva is the defensive/escort laser frigate equivalent. 40 meters and 20 million credits less than Andarta. Sacrifices almost all offensive punch, except the multifunctional needle guns to get there however. Both ships have pretty decent acceleration of 0.6/0.7G that really helps with missle swarms, if the lasers and drones do not get them before that. If anyone is interested in details about anything just ask.
how do you have so much Dv and acceleration ? A NTR, MPD combo ?
