I went ahead and built this monstrosity to see if I can benefit from the guidance's assumptions while still having real armor. Unfortunately, the game crashes if I try to actually load it in the sandbox. This might be relevant: childrenofadeadearth.boards.net/thread/3133/designs-central-stack-crash-gameAlthough I would consider this kind of missile immunity a pretty hefty exploit. Inspired by AtomHeartDragon, I have decided to take my hand in making some specialized microdrones armed with cannon and blast launcher. Introducing, the Trooper class. Besides having a 1 gram conventional cannon, it also has blast launcher capable of launching 36 50 gram fragmentation round and 1000 1 gram kinetic storm in less than a second. With side thrusters, it can also correct its orientation rapidly and thus ensuring accuracy for the internal gun. ...Or it should be as it said on paper. In reality the correction system works so well, it ran out of ammo before reaching launching range... And the computer basically crashed because I forgot it doesn't like this many projectile being launched at once... I should try to go for lesser projectile count and not literally a thousand of them next time. EDIT: Yup, tried out smaller payload count on these microdrones and the effectiveness is increased quite dramatically. And since they are designed as one shot drones, just go for extremely high speed interception and you will get dead capital ships really fast. Neat, seems easily interchangeable with some of my blast/gun launched payloads too. Have you tried tuning the blast launchers to match gun's exit velocity and firing (possibly with some launch cap for multiple, less CPU demolishing salvoes) just after reaching gun firing range? I usually slave direct fire blast launchers to a fixed gun.

Apologies for a bit of derailment AND necro, but... I think 5 Mc is near the minimum price for a manned ship. Much lower than that and you'll be left with glass cannons and anemic monitors. 2 Mc makes this an interesting engineering challenge. Sure you won't have a jack-of-all-trades ship, but those aren't useful in a (realistic) tournament setting anyway. Because the counters need to be "perfect". Now considering that some people have a problem designing ships under 5 Mc, I suggest uploading some modules and designs to get things going. Tournament Ships + Modules:

Given how lasers and EM accelerators generally take large power sources to truly shine, and that their main advantage (huge exit velocities) doesn't really come into play in infantry combat a combination of conventional guns and blast launchers seems optimal for this task. With this in mind I present a collection of small arms built around the same core of 7mm rapid fire combustion gun, complete with 100 round magazine and compact radioisotope energy source, complemented with additional metalstorm-style launcher modules firing a variety of specialized munitions and suitable ergonomic frame with lateral radiating surfaces integrated into stock and accessory rail. The PDW is the most lightweight and compact option complementing its primary mechanism with 16 shot underslung metalstorm system firing firing miniature 10g fragmentation rounds suitable against soft targets. It's intended to allow use both on the surface and in cramped corridors, where fast burst of frag will provide devastating destructive potential and reduced risk of unintended penetrations at the same time and compact frame will aid manoeuvrability and, conversely, the lack of increased penetration option won't be as much of an issue. The AR is the intermediate option, doubling the mini-frag capacity and complementing it with twin 12 shot 100g jacketed osmium penetrator packs for situations demanding increased penetration. Finally, the battle rifle sacrifices compact size and half of it's smaller sibling frag and AP capacity to accommodate single shot overslung launcher capable of firing around 1kg dual purpose EFP/Frag warhead capable of defeating even warship grade armour (with standard naval fabrication techniques the launcher will require post-manufacturing modification to allow recoilless launch or detachment and free recoil of launch container at the moment of firing). Alternatively the launcher can be replaced with similar launch system firing a projectile or projectiles in the same approximate mass range. To simplify the necessary targetting systems and aid use after long period without training the launcher modules all have similar exit velocities to the main gun. To provide environmental sealing and modest amount of protection (hand weapons aren't going to survive direct fire anyway) without compromising their light weight, the weapons will come encased in a layer of UHMWPE weave. The core weapon module: The power source: No mods. I admit, I mostly wanted to see if I could make anything resembling actual weapons given ship editor's constraints. In this regard I declare these creations of mine a success.

Eh. If they were Peter Watts' vampires (read his "Blindsight" and "Echopraxia" if you haven't already) I would just deploy some long, narrow, perpedicular radiators (I have quite a surplus from my continuous rod munitions tests) and scoop them up while they're seizuring.

While I think that the campaign hammers some nails that really do need to be hammered in - repeatedly, and while Earth being quickly rendered uninhabitable is not exactly what I would call an idyllic scenario - and this kind of circumstances does tend to bring out the worst in people - I would expect the actual conflicts to become much nicer in such circumstances for two reasons: - ecologies
- people (especially skilled ones)
Specifically, with Earth gone, both become seriously scarce vital resources that shouldn't be squandered.
Sure, not having all eggs in one basket is a bit of an improvement, but not as much as it could have been given that the biggest and by far most durable basket is irreversibly gone.
It took massive environmental see-saw played by global superpowers to send the planet down the drain - for an average planetside colony hab, the same would take a handful of explosives and a bit of know-how. Even considering the number of colonies scattered around the system, that's awfully precarious compared to sitting around on a big, durable planet (never mind having both colonies AND the planet, plus some long term projects like terraforming Mars). And that's before you even start considering the fragility of necessarily minimal ecologies in those colonies, compared to a massive, robust planetside ecosystem - without solid foothold on a long-term self-sufficient planet (or the kind of mastery and redundancy that only comes after a few My of galactic colonization) the humanity in CoADE is living on a thin sliver of borrowed time.
The bottom line is that in such circumstances you'd probably do everything to keep colonies safe and take as many PoWs as you physically can (don't worry, the old man Tsiolkovsky will probably force you to be more of an asshole than you'd want to be), treating them as humanely as possible and bribing them with booze and hookers (not to mention priority evacuation - see the old man Tsiolkovsky above) if they might want to come over to your side.
Of course the backstory is carefully constructed to justify slinging nukes at each other with reckless abandon as if they were slightly oblong snowballs in a friendly snowball fight as the game tries to model bare technicalities of space ship-to-ship battles, which are already a handful.
Still, limited conflicts are generally much more interesting (and less scary/depressing) as there is much more subtlety and interplay of various factors involved. Given that survival requirements generally stay the same, while power available to break them grows with technological advancement, after certain threshold an all out conflicts boils down to "X fall, everyone dies", where "X" can vary from nukes, to rocks (at orbital velocities) to RKVs.

FOnly thing I would add is different materials do have different emmisivity/radiating of heat properties, so your ship clad in aluminum will shed heat better than a ship clad in aerogel. Actually, I'm not sure that would be the case - silica aerogel is still much better heat conductor than the vacuum surrounding it. It will make difference in short term, non-equilibrium conditions (like the outside of your ship getting flashed by nukes or lasers, or having to dissipate sudden heat flux originating inside for whatever reason), but in long term scenario we can assume that the armour is in equilibrium with the rest of the ship and is radiating the heat as fast as it conducts it (which will always be faster than whatever is inside could accomplish via radiation alone). Surface finish, however will definitely play a role and any sort of polished metal will have low emissivity compared to a dark, matted surface.

Of course it could shift the meta even further towards laserstars, but OTOH I would expect things like modelling mechanical considerations, better reactor modelling, multi-intercepts and not allowing exit from tactical phase as long as projectiles are flying to hit laserstars particularly hard and even things out a bit. only in it's Diatomic form (Nitrogen Gas), Most explosives have a Nitrogen base That's precisely because nitrogen wants nothing more than to recombine into diatomic nitrogen and be left in peace. Making something very stable usually releases a lot of energy, and in this case this something very stable is also a gas in relatively large quantities.

Wear happens less when you're not in Earth's nitriding and oxidising atmosphere, but CDE probably is quite optimistic about it. Oh come on - nitrogen is practically a poor man's noble gas. I would love wear to be taken into account, though. Of course it could shift the meta even further towards laserstars, but OTOH I would expect things like modelling mechanical considerations, better reactor modelling, multi-intercepts and not allowing exit from tactical phase as long as projectiles are flying to hit laserstars particularly hard and even things out a bit.
