the Conning tower is typically heavily armoured, as much or more then the belt and turret face, having the superstructure blown off doesn't make that much of a difference, and have superstructure fires also isn't a big deal. You can have the superstructure blown off with no issue. everything that can cause the ship to explode/sink/stop fighting is covered by lots of armour. can a ship function without the bridge? the bridge is the bits around the conning tower, the conning tower on Iowa class battleships had 17" of KCA steel. you can shoot off the bridge but the CIC and Conning tower are where the ship is controled from, the Conning tower is armoured and the CIC is deep in the citidel

Fixed it for ya fixed what? Nah, it only works if you first shoot the deflector fields down (because as everyone knows, deflector field projectors can't really protect themselves) Unfortunately, we don't have deflector shields to shoot down, so we can never reach step 2

Each era has its own version of "dakka" 3 million BP (before present): rock (maybe one with a sharp edge) 1.75 million BP: rock with sharp edge smashed into it (major innovation in technology!) 750k BP: rock with standardized sharp edges smashed into it (exponential advance) . . . and so on . . .

My first play trough(and only) I only used guns armed drones. I found it pretty easy. I feel that guns are underrated by most player. Tonight I will post a experiment I did with low velocity guns...

If this is to be a full challenge we'd need rules, points and teirs. I propose the below:
Rules: Allowed Weapons: Conventional Guns, Blast launchers Allowed Shells: Solid Slugs, Bomblets, Nukes, Flares (can have a control module but no engines) Allowed Engines: All Provide all designs on steam workshop Provide video screenshots or video of both missions including fleet design, damage to enemy craft and mission complete stats.
Points, Lowest Score Wins: Each Hour over all missions Adds 1 point Each 2 Megacredits spent on all missions Adds 1 point (If a ship survives vesta, you can reuse it on giants at no cost) Each half kilo of reactor or NTR fissionable material in the fleet costs 1 point
Complete the below Two Missions for point total: Vesta Overkill (Combat) On the Surface of Giants (DeltaV)
-- Plutonium teir -- Total Design Variants: 1 Max Fleet Mass: 5kt Unique Rule, Provide a unique backstory: e.g. "A prion arose that can transfer from plants to humans, it causes increased aggression and green skin pigmentation. You fight to prevent genocide of the infected, it was spread by a tainted air filtration plant."
-- Gold -- Total Design Variants: 1 (plus one stock ship that meets rules) Max Fleet Mass: 10kt (Excludes stock ship) Unique Rule: To use the stock ship in giants, it has to survive vesta
-- Silver -- Total Design Varients: 3 Max Fleet Mass: 20kt Unique Rule: You can only use the surviving ships from 'Vesta overkill' for 'on the surface of giants'

Seems like an interesting challenge. Guns have a few things going for them - they scale down to low power and up to large payloads very gracefully (and you can make some *very* interesting payloads if you can go large) and can easily provide huge volumes of fire. Plus, if you find exit velocity inadequate, you can make up for it with sufficiently aggressive intercept.
Sure, guns against highly optimized laser stars would be insanely tough, but against stock designs they should do.
What about putting weapons on shells? I reckon that blast launchers or even powered ones are very much in this challenge's spirit, but what about putting turrets on engine-less shells? I have a more or less self-stabilizing PD shell with pistol-sized turrets (and a nuke).
