Also Mars always rebels so it never ends well. Those damn entitled, backwater redboots, that's easy for them to "declare independence" and forget the vast resources we put into developing their entire infrastructure grumble Aldrin dome was an inside job anyway grumbleAnother typical Terran with their soul held down by gravity! I bet you are mad because you don't have anymore irreplaceable biological species to accidentally wipe out or eat to death! The British Empire wined about all the resources when the Americans rebelled, and guess what the British empire was wrong and tyrannical and so is the Earthgov! Stay on Earth that little mud ball of a planet is doomed anyways!

I apolgize for necroing an old thread, but I think this game deserves something more closely approximating fan art, so I modeled a Gunship in Blender and did a few renders of it. A Gunship in low orbit over Mars: A Gunship over a non-dead earth (just a random background image I had handy, kept it because I thought it looked cool) And long range sensor footage of a task force leaving Phobos: All background images courtesy of NASA The model is still a bit of a work in progress - I had a bit of trouble taking a good reference screenshot, so the guns may not all be located in the proper places. I'm also not happy with how the radiators look currently, but they'll do until I can work out something better. You should make a thread and release them These are amazing! I was looking for a new background for the menu screen and these are perfect! Also how hard was it to render the gunship? DId you just import the model or did you have to sculpt it? Also you can straight up use those files to mount a tiny(possibly gold) gunship model onto an actual gunship as the worlds most self referential hood ornament.

Anywhere that has an atmosphere, yeah - hydrodynamics and aerodynamics we can pick up quite a few things from nature. Anywhere that doesn't have atmo? Three points always make a plane (but when it comes to moving about on the surface you can once again start lifting from nature if there's any appreciable gravity). There are plenty of potential spots where there is little to no gravity, but there might be a plane, on small asteroids and moons. Simple manipulators with gripping points at the end would do very nicely These projects were for an asteroid gripping probe prototype You open your bathroom door and see this on the ceiling.

And I don't want to argue against Tachikomae, but surely geometrically simple designs (boring as they are) are a lot easier to work with from a rocketeering standpoint. I think it depends on the role more than anything in space sure, geometrically simple works fine, but include landing or boarding operations, ground combat etc and i think lots of the little pieces of humanoid/biological design are actually useful, not necessarily the whole package but sections here and there.

The main point is that as a whole it is actually a fucking awful weapon for space combat, but within are many very interesting potential ideas such as the reactor equipped fighting unit, mobile space platform etc... Also mechanically speaking while yes the human knee is pretty wacky, that does not mean it cannot be mechanically improved upon. Mechanically improved upon. Yes. You can do that. And if you're doing it to one of the joints, better make that both of that type of joints, and why not all of the joints. Why not the whole humanoid shape? And then you should apply Antoine de Saint-Exupérys lessons on design. ("A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.") And what you get then isn't very humanoid at all. Hypothetically yes, it does not need to be humanoid, if anything that solely works out while it retains a small size and human occupant(powered armour). But if anything that just opens up a world of of possibilities in regards to interesting and dynamic space combat platforms outside of just grey tubes, tachicoma spider tanks, sentinels from the matrix, etc

is this flying power armour? edit: I like power armour, not mechs, the difference being you wear power armour and pilot a mech Yes and no. The original Zaku was basically built as a human shaped flying space fighter, later it was adapted to ground use. What i have found is that in universe the stats dont give it nearly enough juice to get it flying. In terms of mech's vs powered armour, mobile suits have a pilot, and are huge like a mech, but act and move and are used more like powered armour.

SECTION 2/E MANIPULATORS When i began i assumed the manipulators to be a purely cosmetic the legs are useless in space because for the most part duh no ground, and the arms which serve as weapon mounts are arguably pretty inferior to a simple turret. This piece was mainly just a means to fill out the armour role and weight ratio of the suit. BUT THEN I DISCOVERED SOMETHING AWESOME! Now initially i used the Canadarm/2 as a basis for the manipulators as a means of modelling off of something that has acted as an actual manipulator in space for over 30+ years i thought it was a good starting point. After researching the stats i found this "The SRMS is a robotic arm consisting of a shoulder, elbow and wrist joint separated by an upper and lower arm boom giving it a total of six degrees-of-freedom (shoulder pitch and yaw, elbow pitch and wrist pitch yaw and roll). At a total weight of approximately 431 kg, the Canadarm is capable of manoeuvring payloads of up to 14,515 kg at a rate of .06 m/sec with a maximum contingency operation payload weight of 265,810 kg. Under unloaded conditions the SRMS can achieve a maximum translational rate of 0.6 m/sec. Ironically, the SRMS is incapable of supporting its own weight here on earth and it must be supported by specialized ground handling equipment during its acceptance testing and shipment. Although the SRMS can handle very heavy payloads, movement of the tip is very accurately controlled, allowing precise handling of delicate payloads. The length of the Canadarm is approximately 15 m"-https://www.ieee.ca/millennium/canadarm/canadarm_technical.html Ill explain why this is cool after section 3. SECTION 3 COMPONENTS THAT ARE LACKING/CRAPPY Major propulsion tanks, uh anywhere at all. Of the ms-06f's total weight of around 70 tons i have yet to see any major sources that provide an area where any major amount of propellant or reactor fuel is stored. The ZAKU's M-120A1 120mm Machine Gun, i suspect that this sounded impressive as many current tanks utilise a 120mm calibre weapon, but as many of us know chemical weapons will never really cut it when it comes to space warfare thanks to their low exit velocity. CONCLUSION So is the idea of the mobile suit ms-06f and its weapon kaput? The answer is actually no! The main problem with the mobile suit i believe is specifically that it is trying to do everything. Because it has so much situational equipment and specific, it ends up being poor at allot of it. Combined with the somewhat badly envisioned stats and outputs we can see why it did so stupidly bad. Overweight, under powered and under fuelled but within is the nugget of several potential vehicles which obviously have already been discussed as well as a few that have not. Namely: The boarding drone: Using the incredibly powerful manipulators to rip and tear its way into habitats, it can also be equipped with the Zaku's cracker grenades which pleasantly enough mirror many of our explosive flak missile war heads while providing a 360 shrapnel burst. Similarly the Zaku's Heat Hawk While laughable as a melee weapon(you will not get close enough in space combat and even if you did super heating a metal to melt another metal is pretty dumb considering that generally lowers the strength and deforms the blade) could be re-tooled to simply deliver the suits voltage into the hull coupled with a decent reactor you could short circuit an entire ship after it was disabled. The mobile Artillery platform: Using the "legs" manipulators on treacherous terrain would work, even if on Earth they are too heavy, most of the solar system is 0-<1G so that hardly matters. On treacherous terrain coupled with once again a not shit reactor the drone could act as a semi mobile artillery and missile launch platform or a mobile laser defence position, many rocky moons and asteroids have such low gravity that pure wheels might not work or hold traction, or the terrain might be to sheer and vertical. The reactor Sub-capitol drone: This is a model that already has been used by many users here, a laser equipped sub capitol drone is ideal for escorting missile packs and as a non disposable forward command point. The actual humanoid powered armour: As many can say the practicality of a human shaped power armour containing a human is also reasonable as a kind of miniaturised space suit/combat suit. SO in general what i think is that the mobile suit is another example of En L'an 2000 from 1900 It's not 100% accurate but holds many actual elements of truth to it's potential.

SECTION 1 SECTION 1/A
Thesis:
For a long time now i have been a pretty adamant fan of the long running Mobile Suit Gundam. Gundam has been pretty unique in it's rough dedication to two very interesting and tantalising items to physics nerds. 1 It roughly adheres to a system of Newtonian physics instead of just ignoring them(Star Wars) or outright technobabling over their problems(Star Trek). This includes characters bound to zero-G, the use of O'Neill cylinders etc. 2 It deals with the sociopolitical implications of space colonisation and civilisation in a very localised and "near future" setting( a network of space colonies and Lunar cities).
So with that in mind thanks to Q-switched and his development of this game we finally have a means of dedicated space warfare platform. After several months of enjoying this and working with the systems at hand i thought "Why now is the time for a formal analysis of mobile suits!" Of course i had my own suspicions(many of which were confirmed) through this testing, but never the less i believe this is both an interesting piece of science to do for three main reasons:1 The formal analysis of the popular humanoid combat frame from Gundam an item of nerd culture. 2 A learning point for those who want to include mechanised humanoids in their stories with some degree of scientific basis for what and how they function. 3 finally as a means towards engineering a possibly "realistic" version.
This whole project was a fun experience to see what happens when "Rule of cool" collides head on with applied practical physics.

SECTION 1/C BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The MS-06F Zaku II is one of many variants of the MS-06 Zaku II series of Mobile Suits. The MS-06F was the most produced mobile suit during the One Year War, with 3,246 units built during the war. The MS-06F was piloted by top-scoring Zeon MS aces, as well as by the highest-scoring Zeon ace in the war. It first appears in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.

Technology & Combat Characteristics
The MS-06C Zaku II Early Production Type was heavily armored, which made it heavy and difficult to maneuver. However, further research and development would lead to the creation of a lighter, improved model designated the F-Type Zaku II. The F-Type would quickly become the definitive version of the Zaku II, and all future variants would begin from the F-type as a baseline. Because of the Antarctic Treaty, the F-type lacks the radiation shielding of its predecessor.
The Principality of Zeon saw great potential within the unit for having it perform in various mission roles. The Zeon Military forces produced successful designs, decent designs, and utter failures from the basic Zaku II design. Vice Admiral Dozle Zabi had his own custom Zaku II, which he took out into the Battle of Loum. His MS-06F Zaku II had ornate engravings and markings, double shoulder spiked armor, and lastly, a gigantic Heat Hawk. Even the youngest Zabi son, Garma Zabi had his own Zaku II, the MS-06FS Zaku II. This slight variation of the Zaku II design featured twin 30mm vulcan guns. SECTION 2COMPONENT BREAK DOWN SECTION 2/A
TL/DR VERSION:
Holy shit they were outright drunk when they made those stats, because i'll be frank the Zaku-2 as it stands is outright terrible, as both a vehicle of war and a space craft. "Well duh it was designed to be cool so wha!" Shush shush i know, but before we can do any real fixing we first need to look at what and how things are now so as to progress and draw specific conclusions.
SECTION 2/B COMPONENT 1 THE MINOVSKY-IONESCO ULTRA COMPACT FUSION REACTOR
Inside of Gundam the Minovsky reactor is described as having a D+3He reaction, this helps us in both designing and analysing the reactor. From the official stats we know the Zaku-II had a power supply of 951 Kw. From (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_energy_conversion) Efficiency of 48% is possible for the D-E-C method of production, this works for our model. For radiation percentage: Reaction MeV /fusion TJ/ kg % Thermal % Neutrons % Radiation 1000 MW turn g/s L-C A-N Exhaust velocity D + 3He ⇒ 4He+p 18.3 353.23 75% 5% 20% 0.002831 16 YES 8.9%c
From (http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/fusionfuel.php#hb)
The reason for using H as a coolant is due the fact that if circulated as a neutron absorber it could possibly bond to create new D atoms acting as a breeder reactor. Notes: Well from just the initial design i can say quite a bit. First off the Zaku-II power supply is laughably small. If any of you have been on the forums long enough you will know that for the size of a bath tub you could squeeze out as much as a megawatt. In Universe the reactor is radiation-less, but as this is an attempt at modelling it realistically we see that in total more energy exits as thermal and combined neutron radiation than does actual electricity. This power issue dramatically back ends into the rest of the parts and needs of the suit. My estimation is that it sounded quite impressive when compared to modern military vehicle power output(The Honeywell AGT1500 puts out 1,120 kW) while not realising the massive amounts of power necessary to do things in space)
SECTION 2/C ZAKU MAIN DRIVE Now designing this was a a bit more open. No major specifications on the Zaku engines really exist outside of total thrust, however as mentioned above the power issue bites you in the ass here. You see the original listing of thrusters on the Zaku stats the following:" 2 x 20500 kg 2 x 1000 kg ". I will assume this means 2 back pack thrusters being the primary and two feet thrusters. As the main thrusters in Gundam typically sit in the backpack area i presume those are the 20Kn ones. I decided to use Deuterium over Helion as while still rare it is far more plentiful than Helion in relation to solar system extraction potential. I also utilised a resisto-jet because while magnetic botteling the fusion into a thrust plume is theoretically possible, most MI-UCFR illustrations utilise a toroidal fusion basis\/. In addition the cables on the Zaku are regularly called power lines, not plasma distributors or funnels/Channels.
Notes: Now you might see were the problems start if you see the power necessary. Even after pushing the power to over 99% total reactor output i am only able to juice up half of the statistical thrust recorded for the Zaku. Dropping the power while jacking up the injector speed does not heat up the Deutrium enough to maintain thrust. On another note, i suspect that similarly to how the acceleration is measured in what i assume are Earth-standard 9.8 m/s G's, this thrust might actually be 200900kg of the main backpack thrusters if adjusted for Earth use. Of course the problem of the thruster then becomes nearly ten times worse in terms of it's statistical output.
SECTION 2/D COCKPIT
Ironically enough this might be simultaneously the most realistic and easiest to integrate and least necessary component. As has been discussed here multiple times the need for a manned combat unit is pretty bad compared to the alternatives of remote operation (this even came up in Gundam as the Elmeth would prove with it's mobile bits). At the same time it is a component which can actually operate within the limits of the power supply. I heightened and lengthened the typical 1 person hab section to account for the spacious interiors the zaku is portrayed as having, i also bumped up the power requirements as the Zaku usually has a large number of scanners and systems operating beyond life support.
Notes: Basically as i said, simultaneously a component which if properly rad shielded can be fully powered and work, while simultaneously being completely replaceable with a smaller cheaper remote control.
Cont in SECTION 2/E soon.

I was originally going to go with a simple mute, but the mute function was moved and i had not found it at that time. Regardless it was not an arbitrary decision it was going(as all and any actions i make do) off of reported posts NAOP had made. I updated the sheriff's office, so as if he had question when he returned he could look there. When i polled the forum they wanted direct action with explanation, i took direct action and explained it. I assumed NAOP would simply read the stickied sheriff's office instead of making a whole thread. Next time i will send you a pm 1 hour before a formal mute or ban so you have heads up.

That is very unusual... patch 1.1.1.1 touched none of the file loading system (it touched very little in fact). After removing "3", are the userdesigns still crashing while replacing values? If so, you could keep removing the offending modules until it works, or alternatively, send me your userdesigns file (and a list of mods in use). Never mind sorry i bothered you! I just ripped out the offending user designs, cleared the .obj and deleted the section from the userdesing.txt problem seems to have been cleared for now. Guess i fixed that one my self

the new UHMWPE now weaker. I'm quite dissatisfied with this change. There are Spectra/Dyneema formulations with strength even higher than original. I hate to say it, but this feels like another kneejerk response from Sempai~. He was too quick to a bow down to mouthbreathing retards this time. NAOP i have warned you about language (specifically mouth-breathing retards line), you will be banned for 1(one)day ending the 30th.
