I have several times encountered an issue that results in a vastly superior force being "collided" with by missile or drone vessels, or short ranged capital ships if they start within their maximum range envelope.
Given that all of my small (~350m^2) gunships have 250km+ ranges against the stock gunship, and several have 400-500km ranged versions this is a fairly frequent start situation.
I also note that the end positions of the fleets are approximately those of the entry to combat, rather than the 500-1000km 'out' that the AI passes to before I leave the battle when available I tend to attempt intercept at similar phase but a different radius, and have the AI come to me, so they should be on highly elliptical or hyperbolic orbits rather than the "same as before" orbit that I frequently see. I do sometimes see one or two vessels split off into their own fleet on these orbit types, but it is less common than the 'no change' variant.
With large battle spaces it would also be more consistent if newly arriving fleets predicted from the strategic view were injected as additional groups at the appropriate stage and position rather than 'missing' through the ongoing battle.
