Bug: Major problems with partial armoring mass additions

There is something really wrong with the armor function. Using partial armoring no mass is added until >18% covered, very little mass is added up to 41.8% covered, and then at 41.9% covered a huge amount of mass and cost suddenly appears onto the ship.
No armor on the drone at all (base line):
No mass added from 10m aramid fiber covering the front 18%:
Very low amounts of mass added for the front 41.8% covered:
HUGE mass increase by adding an extra .1% coverage (up to 41.9%):
