So, i've noticed that adding armor to the outside of any gun barrel in this game does nothing to improve barrel strength. This is rather extremely disappointing, as it forces railgun and coilgun designs to rely on inefficient extra-thick coils and rails to achieve structural stability.
pls fix.

It would definitely be nice if I could brace coil/rail guns with something like Osmium or VCS.

Composite barrel time?
Barrel armor isn't tracked like hull armor, right? Otherwise, a gap in the barrel armor, if structurally needed for strength, would allow the weapon to destroy itself quickly. If needed only for stiffness / accuracy, this would make a reasonable amount of sense.
Have a good example of a gun that would benefit greatly from this?

Have a good example of a gun that would benefit greatly from this? virtually any high-velocity coilgun or railgun. Reducing barrel flexion due to axial loading massice improves the accuracy of all coilguns, to the point where I have encountered cases of a 15 km/s coilgun having 3x the range of a 20km/s, because the faster version is closer to permament deformation.

High caliber IRL cannon are also highly composite in nature; the staging on old battleship main gun's barrel jacketing was the most efficient way to prevent the barrels from exploding.

So something coating the barrel with a high specific stiffness would be beneficial, then. Diamond-coated barrels, here we come!

It has got to be a typo, but it has one of the highest specific stiffnesses. Decent for a high power coilgun, but kinda bad on reload time.

will investigate, I am tuning my current design around a 10-second reload time anyway.

I agree with the OP, all the real coilguns and railguns I've seen have used composite barrels. Generally they've been aluminum-and-plastic, but hey.
While we're at it, can we give conventional guns tapering barrels?

I fairly sure qswitch is probably implementing them but since railgun and coilgun still has issue of stupid high efficiency, he temporary take it down because it would make them deviate even more ridiculously.
Hopefully he can fix it in time.
