Ok if you have been following my blogs on my work into Attack Vector Tactical in Children of a Dead Earth. You know that I have been struggling with reproducing the coilguns form Attack Vector Tactical in Children of a Dead Earth.
The reason why I have been having problems is that the shell in AT:V act more like tube-fired missiles out of a Conventional Cannon with the AI script turned to ignore range turned on. You can see the problem right away, as there is no guarantee that the right AI would be used. This forced me to skip producing conventional cannons with tube fired missiles.
So, at first I tried using carrier modules with kinetic-kill missiles. The problem is with muzzle velocity. You see, the coilguns in AT:V can aim at their targets in any direction, and in CoaDE the carrier modules can only fire in one direction. The missiles I was using for these carrier modules where ion missiles, that have very low maneuverability. They were based on a small gun drone that I had worked on before. Unless the carrier module is forward mount, the drone would not receive any benefits from the carrier module's muzzle velocity.
Then I tried making Sand casters that had a large range. What I came up with was ranges from 130 Km to 245 Km, but rate of fire of 2 rounds per second to 1 per second. The energy was high thought per round from 231 kj to 882 kj to 894 kj. Mostly because the muzzle velocity is high, with a range of 21.5 km/s to 40.5 km/s. The problem with this design is that in AT:V coilgun rounds are there to force you to fire your defensive lasers and or missile, or to use you delta-V to dodge the shots. The 1g rounds do not force you ship to perform evasive maneuvers or activate your defense of lasers.
The last thing I tried was to make a coil gun that fired flak rounds. I came up with a 25 X 40g flak shell and then got the coilgun to fire it up to a range of 54.5 km at 1 MW of power. It rate of fire is 1m and 8 sec, but is four barreled. While this range is 3 times that of a conventional Cannon, at 20.6 Km, it is very short when most laser can have ranges in the hundreds of Km.
After this I went back to work some more on those ion missiles, thinking that all I had to do was make better missile. But I feel that I am running in circles this time and what to have my work so far double checked by voting.
