I've spent days trying to beat "Vesta Overkill", tried at least 50 times, probably more. Finally, I managed to kill the enemy fleet, and even had working ships with delta v left. But the enemy left three missile fleets in orbit of Vesta. They count as survivors. I didn't have enough dv left to catch them all. Time limit ran out and the enemy commander, who I just had shot to pieces, taunted me. On the reverse, when they kill my fleet, of course I lose immediately and get no chance to get any leftover missile fleets in. You don't learn anything from this. It's just bad game design, unfair, and IMMENSELY frustrating!

The same thing happened to me. I had to divide my fleet as some ships fuel tanks and/or engines where destroyed. I was able to send one ship after each fleet, and they were able to force all of the drones and/or missiles to use up their fuel. You may have to do the same next time. The game will count unmanned ships as destroyed if they are forced to waste all their delta-v, with only manned ship being able to remain with no delta-v
