So I am new to the game, with all that that implies. I have gotten a good handle on the orbital mechanics of the game, as well as managed to clear about half the campaign. I am currently stuck on Homecoming.
My problem with this is that I do not have the knowledge to design a ship correctly. I have played KSP, SimpleRockets2, and SimplePlanes. Extensively. I was wondering if someone can point me to a tutorial or something like that to learn. On the absence of it, are there any white papers that touch on this subject (scientific papers).
Furthermore, I am close to unlocking the module design on the campaign and I wanted to see if it were possible for someone to link to a tutorial on how to design some of the offensive modules effectively.
I recently tried to build a miniature nuclear explosive, but I was unable to compress it enough. (I was trying to make a nuke cannon).
So yeah, for having the game less than a month I think that I am doing okay in it, but I really want to progress and my current knowledge of science and engineering is not sufficient for me to do so.

You might like this as a resource:
For ship optimization you might want to look at one of the armor threads to get some general Ideas.
For module customization, I mostly learned by trial and err... and shameless stealing designs from apophys until I understood lazers and reactors.
After you figure out generally how there's a lot of fun in toying around with the different materials.

first you need to go to the workshop and look up the following from the workshop
Dragon Claw Armaments [Core] Catalog:
look up HydraArsenalShip
From there you can find the other ships that he has made.
The first thing you need to learn is armor, and Dragon Claw Armaments is the best place to start. The stock ship has very poor armor, and just re-armoring them can increase the number of ships they can take on by a factor of 5.

put in the following into the workshop search engine. Slam Jam Nuclear Missile Spark Mini-Missile Pike Flak Missile MkII FlashNuclear Missile Mk II Dagger Micro-Missile.
They are still good missiles, even by today standard. And all of my best missiles are based on the Slam Jam Nuclear Missile. Which is a good replacement for Devastator missiles. Lighter, faster, better armored and with a more powerful warhead. May of the other missile are good replacements for the stock missile.
Midnight Inustries:
put Midnight Inustries or Mid. ind. -Micro Missile
He has good player designed modules that will get you started, but you will have to improve later.

Drones drones drones. I have these really cheap drones with 22 mm conventional weapons on them. They shred any ship in the game that costs twice as much as them. Don't even worry about armor. You just want to spam the enemy with so many that they'll get shredded by the vollies before they can possibly target them all even if they can shoot one down in half a second. I got gold on Vesta Overkill no problem. I'm working on Solar Ties right now and my 150 strong drone fleet shredded them in one intercept. Only one Corsair survived but damaged and then I just cleaned him up with the one nuclear frigate I mostly use to protect my fleet from drone attacks. I send out like 20 of my special nuclear missiles that launch unguided nukes that creates a screen the enemy will just fly into and get toasted. 20 is enough to kill any drone fleet. It's easy to get gold because it's easy to avoid ever engaging the enemy with any of my capital ships directly.
I send all my drone launcher ships on an intercept course with the enemy(to save drone delta-v), then when I'm like 30 minutes away I launch all my drones and then as soon as the battle starts I click "ignore range" and they take care of the rest. Unfortunately you won't even get to see the battle with this method because the game drops down to 0 fps. But just let the battle running for a few minutes and you'll always come back to find the enemy completely wiped out.
