So, it turns out that you can not put modded materials in whichever file you want and let the game sort it out. If you want to modify materials that are already in Crystals.txt and Paints.txt (maybe there are more), you have to put them in the same-named file in your mod folder.

Now don't get me wrong, but I honestly thought that that would be obvious to anyone, just because it's pretty logical. Me, I'm adding _mod for everything that I change, so it's easy to discern modded stuff from stock. Also, kinda logical.

There's actually a precedent in the stock files: sodium is in Metals.txt, yet it is a liquid (because it has a defined viscosity) and not a solid.
In case someone doesn't add _mod at the end of their modded material's name, it is also possible to take a stock material that is in Alloys.txt, Ceramics.txt or Fibers.txt, and put its modded version in one of the other two files and it will still work. Same things for liquids: if for example the stock material is in Fluids.txt, you can put a modded version of it in Coolants.txt and it will still work. The same is not true for materials that are in Crystals.txt and Paints.txt however, which seems to be the exception rather than the norm.

Hello, This isnt a material mod but its a modding question. Is it possible to alter the mass of a remote control e.g. from 400g to 4g? Not just change the volume by changing the material type to something denser via the mods folder.

I don't think it can be changed. I searched for .4 and 400 in Limits.txt, but no joy.
P.s.: this should go in its own thread.
