Below is a list of commonly reported issues found with Children of a Dead Earth. Check here first to make sure your issue is not here already before posting.

Issue: Game crashes on startup, or game runs but displays a black screen or corruption, or game randomly freezes.
Possible Fixes

Disable fullscreen. Fullscreen seems to be a leading culprit of these sorts of issues, and disabling it fixes 90% of the problems. If the game crashes, you will have to alter the settings manually (preferences file location listed at bottom of post).
Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date.
Ensure you are using your discrete graphics card rather than integrated graphics card if applicable.
Lower graphical settings.
Reinstall OpenAL.

Issue: Game suffers from major performance issues while in the main menu.
Possible Fixes

Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date.
Lower graphical settings. Prime culprits of poor performance include "Radiator Lighting" and "Bounce Lighting".
Reduce your resolution using the option "Screen Scaling".
Note: This issue remains unresolved for some older high end graphics cards (from 2008). Noted cards with this issue include the Nvidia GeForce GTX 200 series.

Issue: Graphics are corrupted and show black screens or corrupted lettering.
Possible Fixes

Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date.
Disable fullscreen.
Lower or disable graphical settings.
Note: This issue remains unresolved for AMD APUs. In general, APUs are not ideal for gaming.

Issue: Can't take screenshots via Print Screen.
Possible Fixes

Use Steam Screenshots (defaults to F12).
Play in Windowed mode. Print Screen works corrected in windowed mode.

FAQ:

The game has crashed. Where can crash logs be found?
Windows: .../Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/CDE/Crashes/
Mac: .../[Username]/Library/Application Support/CDE/Crashes/

Where can the preferences file be found?
Windows: .../Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/CDE/
Mac: .../[Username]/Library/Application Support/CDE/

What is the Minimum Spec?
OS: Windows 7+ or Mac OS X 10.7+
Processor: Intel Core i5 @ 1.70 GHz processor
Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000
Storage: 200 MB available space
Also, OpenGL 2.1 or better is recommended.

I want to clear all custom data. What should I do?
Find the "UserDesigns.txt" and "UserLevels.txt" files where the preferences files are. DO NOT delete them, but delete their contents and leave a blank file. Otherwise, Steam may redownload them from the cloud. You should delete the "Mods" folder there too. Also, make sure you unsubscribe from all Steam Workshop items.

Perhaps someone would care to update the instructions.

I'm attempting to play using a 15" MacBook Pro with touchbar.

I have a red screen for a second or two & no UI on startup except the mouse pointer.

I cannot find the Prefs file in the location listed in the OP. There is no /[Username]/Library/Application Support/CDE/ directory at all. I therefore can't disable full screen mode; I have tried looking through hidden files. I have also looked in my steam folder, & can only find a single file, which is presumably the application itself.

I am naturally very unhappy to have bought a product which has obviously not been adequately tested & does not work on my Mac despite being advertised as doing so.

This comes rather late, but I just had the same experience. How it was fixed (Mac):

1. Open [username]/Library/Appilication Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Children of a Dead Earth

2. Right-click on Children of a Dead Earth, and select Show Package Contens.

3. Open Contents/Resources/Data/Default Preferences.txt

4. Change Fullscreen from "true" to "false", save and relaunch.

After first succesful launch, the actual Preferences file is created. You can then adjust the fullscreen from it or from the game, and restore the default settings as they are.

Thanks so much darishante. It works! I'd almost lost hope since making my post in November. By chance I came back this evening & found your post.

Given the nature of this issue, perhaps the Devs should consider patching the prefs file so that the first launch is in windowed mode...

I am very close to asking for a refund.

All I have gotten from the game so far is an "OUT OF RANGE" blank screen of death.

I have tried with -windowed -w 1024 and -refresh 60 in Steam launch parameters and windows direct access parameters. No luck.

I cant find this games settings file, it is not in the address mentioned in the OP.

I dont know what else to do.

I guess "OUT OF RANGE" is monitor problem.
You may want to fully reinstall "your" GPU drivers.
For that, you'd 1st need to uninstall the old ones.
For that, easy way is Display Driver Uninstaller a.k.a DDU
