Thinking about the world of COADE, I've been trying to come up with a plausible explanation for the presence of humans on each of the inhabited worlds. Anyway, I've noticed that Daphnis has a population of only 319 people.
What could possibly be the explanation for maintaining such a small colony on such a small moon?

Anyway, I've noticed that Daphnis has a population of only 319 people. What could possibly be the explanation for maintaining such a small colony on such a small moon? Daphnis sits right in the middle of the Keeler gap within Saturn's A-ring, so, theoretically, it should be a good place to base a refueling/processing station for mining vessels trawling the A-ring. Do note though, that in this regard, the B-ring is far more suitable for mining activities, and the Cassini Division would likely be the best place to base resource collection activities. The low density of 0.34 g/cm3 suggests a composition of primarily water-ice and other volatiles, which are useful for the manufacture of chemical fuels and propellant. It could also be a base for studying the Saturnian ring system, moon formation, and gravitational perturbations of the rings. For all we know, it could be a colony of stragglers determined to eke out a living on their own, distant from the influence of other factions. It could be that one of the factions has a nominal colony on the moon primarily to maintain ownership. It could be an isolated military research base, or a bioweapon development laboratory. To be honest, there are too many possibilities to count. Do note, however, that I'm not an expert. You can contact someone like matterbeam if you truly wish to compile a list of plausible reasons behind human colonization of the solar system. Also, may I have a look at the background you've constructed so far? I'm building a sci-fi universe of my own, and want to know whether my justifications for human expansion align with yours.

Who said this is the intentional/final population of Daphnis? Maybe they are just the vanguard of a bigger colony, or they were wiped out by some kind of disaster: disease, massive life support failure, USTA nuking, etc...
