I've encountered a bug while testing my various armor configurations. (http://childrenofadeadearth.boards.net/thread/1612/cyborgs-kinetic-armor-research-thread). In order to test configurations I have an unarmed enemy ship with the armor configuration I want to test set to striker AI and have it approach me. However I have found that sometimes the intercept occurs at ~100km, the range I have on the enemy given my 15km/sec railgun, and other times occurs at about 5km.
If you want to recreate this bug, recreate the setup that I have. Set yourself to a warship, preferably one with long range weapons, and set the enemy to an unarmed ship with no weapons and striker AI. Run the fight a few times and observe the distance you intercept at. (It happens at least once every ten fights or so.)
Running shorter turns/time steps seems to reduce the likelihood this happens but not negate it.
I have little knowledge of the inner workings of CDE, but it seems like the code is skipping a check that looks if either ship has weapons that are able to target the enemy.
