To make an RTG with just 100g of the stuff will set you back 4.14 exacredits. There's no way this isn't some kind of bug.

I asked the same thing before. It's probably not actually a bug, it's just an extremely rare Isotope, and a huge pain to create in any notable quantity.

Just like most people, I very rarely use RTG's. But when I do, I use graphene encapsulated Po-210. Because Po-210 is cheap, and generates a decent amount of power for fairly little mass, but has a low melting point.

The cost is expected. Nearly all Pu-244 left from the solar system formation has decayed (80 million year half life). Additionally, it is not produced in any usable quantities in any nuclear fuel cycle at all, so it can't be produced in a breeder reactor. In fact, the only reasonable way to produce large quantities of it is to repeatedly detonate nuclear weapons and collect the byproducts.

That's enough of a reason to me...

Maybe Q has some plan to initiate some kind of economy system; and maybe if enough nukes are used in battle the price of PU-244 drops and becomes a viable RTG fuel.
"Years were spent developing a viable PU-244 RTG. When the designs were brought to the cheif engineer of the RPF's fleet, he stared in shock, screamed 'WHY' and subsequently dropped dead on the spot."
