gee I wonder what happens if a laser or semi-sandblaster tracks across its surface? The actual missile I have on my side has thick aramid fiber frontal armour, and the engines survive long enough to get in range. Outruns many point defence weapons, but 1GT of nukes already does decent damage at 1Mm range, it's just that 100km away is more preferable My alternate, more sane one has 1 engine with 6.5gs of thrust, 18km/s dV And then there's this... damage at one megameter, ok, interceptor missiles FTW

tactical view, a lot of dV, a hell of a lot of thrust

tactical view, a lot of dV, a hell of a lot of thrust 10Gs?, given a 4+km/s start at very short range? when I have a 9.8Mt warhead?

So.
Did you know you can refuel missiles?
Allows for a different take of the missile bus concept - the missile bus being a drone that flies closer to the enemy to launch missiles. Well, a launcher, etc is extra mass. With a tanker drone and some missiles, you can turn that into extra deltaV. And thus you can spend nearly all the deltaV in the missiles at launch accelerating towards the enemy prior to entering engagement range (always a good idea when opposing lasers), and top them off to let them enter engagement range with full tanks.
Or if you're microing enough, you can send off your tankers to rendezvous with missiles that missed the target (assuming they're not beelining out of the system too fast for you to catch them), fuel them up and send them back in. Of course, the micro required to prevent missiles from expending their last deltaV and rendering themselves inert might be a bit impractical.
Still.
... Probably works best at extreme (interplanetary?) ranges, or in, say, the Jovian system?

...Great, now I want the option to have fuel tank be selectively empty so I can use the drone remaining fuel source to refuel the empty tank in the missile and launch them at enemies for further efficiency.

Ah, yep, they were gimballed, and you could see how it oscillates pretty badly as a result. I was over-estimating its ability to correct for its own thrust. I swapped in a non-gimballed NTR and some weaker chemical rockets. Then added some radiators for more of a cross-section. It's surprisingly effective now, if it hits just right. also, you can have gimballed thrusters if you just turn their speed down
