As I discussed in this thread, coilgun acceleration (and thus efficiency) in game is inversely proportional to the number of stages, while in reality efficiency mostly increases and peak acceleration is not changed when more stages are added. This is either a bug or it requires goooood explanation in infolinks, as behaviour in game looks extremely counter-intuitive and illogical.

If it's not a bug, it's almost certainly due to electromagnetic interference between the coils.
