I like to pit identical set of ships against each other. However, I noticed a strange behavior.
Apparently, if you are in charge of the fleet (No AI vs Aggressive), you are almost guaranteed to lose a 1 ship vs 1 ship battle. For example, tens of player lasers getting quickly blinded by AI lasers, which get a few blinded before the player ships ran out of lasers facing at that side. When I let the AI control the fleet, though, (Aggressive vs Aggressive), both sides lose similar amount of lasers.
You still have chance to win the battle against the AI by pitting multi-ship identical fleets against each other, and just disable all of their weapons without the need to kill them before moving on to the next one.

I had hoped distributed fire would work on modules, so in this case if you have as many lasers as they have laser mounts and you mark them as priority targets, they're all shot at once. I guess not?

Yes, but with this strange behavior, the lasers will probably go blind instantly, without blinding a single enemy laser...

Does this occur only with lasers? Maybe you should give the AI a 100 W flashlight to see if player lasers really die that fast.

Huh. What about coilguns and conventional cannons? Do AI guns one-shot kill weapons too?

Maybe it's for balance? To force the player to use tactics rather than overpowered craft that the AI has no idea how to use? qswitched, as KSPers would say, is this a bug or a feature?

The AI micromanages target picking which is why it is so successful. For instance, it focuses fire on uncapped lasers and heated weapons first, and switches targets every frame if it deems that is more effective. The default behavior (that the player uses) just focuses on one targeted weapon at a time. I suppose in future patches, it's reasonable to have the player targeting micromanage for you.
