As someone else discovered, if the frontal armor of the ship is flat, it counts for no mass or cost.
This can be tested by adding a layer of armor on the front of your ship with some expensive material, set thickness to 5m, and setting the Start at % to 100 and gradually lower it until the frontal armor cap appears. At this point it will have a visual thichkness of 5m, it will appear to stop enemy fire if used in combat, but will cost and weight almost nothing.
