So how do I make an engine that my missiles can shut down in mid flight? As it is its fairly annoying to have a huge number of missiles but all of them use up all their delta v while still 100kms out from the target.

Or are you looking more in depth at what causes a failure to shut down at high%dv initial burns?

Also my missile did not use mid-course during tactical combat between ships, meaning they were very short ranged and went ballistic very quickly

Funnily enough... I've had an instance where decreasing the amount of fuel reserved for terminal actually made my missiles less likely to burnout. Didn't exactly statistically analyze what happened, but it's consistent enough that I've kept the increased boost phase.
