Ok, here's what I have so far with Wine testing:
I've only tested on my desktop, which is a bit old; I'll be trying out my laptop tomorrow as soon as I get the chance.
Here's what works "out of the box":
The game installs and loads.
I was able to interact with all of the main menu items with no issues.
I was able to view all of the ships/stations with no issues*.
I was able to setup/begin a sandbox skirmish**.
Here's what doesn't work "out of the box":
I was unable to start the first campaign mission (although the menu works just fine, it just hangs on loading for quite some time )
* The music started to get a bit choppy about one minute in to looking at the ships/stations; the issue became progressively worse over the next five mins or so. Although, I don't think it's a sound issue; I think it's a memory issue. My reasoning being: As the issue progressed, everything became more choppy; even to the point that clicking menu items was delayed (plus, after I restarted the game, I turned the sound down to zero with the same results). **Edit** Based on the error logs, it looks like it may be a sound issue, not a memory leak or anything.
** I was able to encounter the enemy and the battle began, but as things heated up, the game started to get a bit choppy. When I realized that I had no idea what I was doing, and had no business pitting my ships against an enemy; I decided to quit to the main menu; at this point the game crashed.
Here's the Wine/OS info
Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit
Playonlinux 4.2.10
Wine version 1.7.53-steam_crossoverhack
Desktop specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4GB RAM
GeForce GTX 650 w/ 1GB
I'll play around with different wine versions as well as looking into playing around with the Wine options; but I'd be willing to bet my desktop just doesn't have enough resources to fully run the game; like I said, I'll try it out on my laptop that has superior specs ASAP.
