Thanks for the brain food, I will chew on this info and play around with the designs. I wasn't aware of how the graph shape comes into play, and other things you mentioned. I've been trying to find out where the line is, where are Cannons better, Railguns better, Coilguns better, etc. Will look to play around with those Railguns using the suggestions you made. Thanks. By the way, I was playing around with Cannons and got the highest km/s Cannon design I've made yet. 18 t, 193 kc, 4.48 km/s. And this led me to compare them to my Coilgun/Railgun designs of similar range and led to this post. Then I saw that stock Cannons were also as good or better at range for small targets than the stock Coilguns/Railguns of similar km^2 range but higher price/power consumption. PS I see the biggest part of price of all projectile weapons is often the turret but I've had no success with getting non turreted nose mounted Guns of anytype to work except on drones. Any advice?

Compared to coilguns, that is pretty bad. Here's a coilgun to compare with. I posted it a while ago in the "post your designs" thread. 1.25 t, 28.7 kc, 55.7 km/s, 25 MW power draw (meant to be deployed in sets of 4). 25 MW of reactor+radiator is around 0.5 t & 10 kc, roughly. Code: CoilgunModule 25.0 MW 276mm Turreted Coilgun UsesCustomName false PowerConsumption_W 2.5e+007 Coil Composition Molybdenum WireRadius_m 0.00275 NumberOfTurns 50 NumberOfLayers 1 NumberOfStages 50 BarrelArmorThickness_m 0 Armature Composition Magnetic Metal Glass BoreRadius_m 0.138 Mass_kg 0.001 Tracer Silver Payload null Loader PowerConsumption_W 470 Turret InnerRadius_m 0.9 ArmorComposition Silica Aerogel ArmorThickness_m 0.0001 MomentumWheels Composition Potassium RotationalSpeed_RPM 3400 AttachedAmmoBay Capacity 4000 Stacks 100 TargetsShips true TargetsShots true

Thanks a ton.
1. Do nose mounted (non turreted projectile weapons) have any "best uses" besides on small drones? 2. Do Cannons outshine Coilguns/Railguns for any purpose or use besides small low powered drones/ships?

I wouldn't use non-turreted weapons anywhere, because the AI has a really hard time aiming ships to fire them. That may change with future updates. 2. A drone that doesn't have enough power to equip a coilgun is probably too weak to really use effectively. The only serious use for cannons I can think of is boosting a missile or drone payload towards the enemy. But coilguns can do that effectively, too.

I disagree a little, a small micro drone swarm with some plinky little 20mm cannons can surgically eviscerate a ship if gotten close enough by drone bus drone.

Indeed, I was just playing around with this today. You can put a large number of these on the side of a drone and still have it be very small and cheap: ConventionalGunModule 20mm Turreted Cannon UsesCustomName false Barrel Composition Vanadium Chromium Steel Length_m 0.1 Thickness_m 0.001 Propellant Composition Octogen Mass_kg 0.001 GrainRadius_m 0.0001 Projectile Composition Iron BoreRadius_m 0.01 Mass_kg 0.001 Tracer Silicon Payload null Loader PowerConsumption_W 10 Turret InnerRadius_m 0.032 ArmorComposition Boron Carbide ArmorThickness_m 0.0015 MomentumWheels Composition Lead RotationalSpeed_RPM 2750 TargetsShips true TargetsShots true

A 1gram 276mm disk of MGM? Seems legit with a coil work rate of 766MW during the in coil shot travel time. No chance that could collapse, vaporise or have any other failure mode.

Isn't coilgun projectile heating dependent on the length of said projectile? For that, pancakes actually make sense. Not sure if magnetic acceleration is equal enough on its surface to avoid shattering, though.

A plasmathrower is fine too. Not when you like your projectiles solid and not dispersing into gas. And to have an effective range of more than a few tens of meters.

Something very satisfying about a cannon. At least there are no claims cannons are broken. The opposite, the cannons in game or heavier and don't perform as well as real cannons due to the being simple tubes.

Not when you like your projectiles solid ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Nu? What's a "plasmathrower"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_railgunMPD thrusters are actually an example of this on some level. See also plasma cutters.
