Batteries would be a nice future addition.
It seems odd that our remote controls don't require one...
And I'd like to make reasonable drones with small conventional guns that don't require a massive rtg or radiators.
A basic gun and turret requires about 200 watts, easily achievable in a relatively light/compact form factor with modern technology.
Staging (primarily for missiles) would follow current technologies/practice for large SAMs. Whether we use it for terminal delta-v or cruising, I think it would have a very high utility factor in-game.

IIRC, blow-back receivers for chemical guns are on the to-do list.

Aren't straight blowback receivers notoriously heavy and impractical when used for anything more powerful than pistol cartridges? Delayed blowback is a different story.

There are pretty big blowback guns around the 20mm ballpark. I don't think the type of action was determined, just that a purely mechanical type may be coming. |

Does a 2-3kg 1kW nuclear reactor with paper thin, 2400K radiators not work for you? There is a thread around comparing these, and the best are good to the point where I wouldn't think twice about batteries unless you are looking for approximately a sub-200W, sub-1kg solution. |

I've actually started tinkering with some of those from the unlimited power thread.
In terms of manufacturing ease, long term storage, and real-world practicality, chemical batteries do have their place.

I realize that it would be a little more complex, but KSP has shown that it can be done. Also, because of N-body physics and pewpewpew, it would be better than Kerbal if it could be pulled off. I just want transonic suborbital attack planes to hit low-orbit targets.

That would be cool for a mod, but I don't really see that coming in the main game, mostly because going into atmospheres or ground bases aren't CoaDE's goals, but also the complexity. However, having a ground base shooting at attacker groups is probably very important and game-changing in strategies, and CoaDE may miss many things simply by not having them. |

The main advantage floated for having lasers based on asteroids as superior to spaceships is they can mount huge lasers and dump heat directly into the rock.
Add that into the game and we'll have players posting pictures of glowing molten asteroids in hours.
