Obviously the game is highly moddable in the limited sense of using the existing tools to make your own versions of things that are already implemented. But is it possible to add entirely new mechanics? For instance, if I wanted to add Particle Beams as a distinct class of weapons, with their own attributes and mechanics that don't match an existing class, is it possible to do that?
And could I change the existing game mechanics, for instance to make it possible to recover previously-launched drones, or allow extraction of fuel from an atmosphere if in low enough orbit - are that sort of changes possible?

This kind of changes aren't possible. The closest thing is black box modules which allow every parameter to be defined arbitrarily.

Okay. Might have to mess with materials properties a little, then... Thanks for the reply.

Given that COADE is a one person's project I would expect most of the mechanics to be built directly into the source code and thus not extendable by mods.

You can do minor changes like removing the laser ablation cap with hex editing the game exe directly, but anything bigger than changing single lines is not feasible

That's about what I expected, but I thought I'd check just in case. I think I could probably do most of what I want just by altering properties and extending the range of some parameters. I have a hunch about how I could do in-game fuel production, but I don't know if the game will be able to process it properly. Time to back up and experiment, I guess. Thanks, guys!
