...a huge variety of options for the nuclear rocket. We basically just use a NERVA type engine. Why one option out of the multitude available?... ..On the other hand, there's the reality that NERVA type engines are at present the best understood Nuclear Rocket Engine. The designer has said that they're not implementing any technology that hasn't been proven to work in-the-real-world yet. So far, (afaik) the only atomic engines that have been produced and tested are simple solid-core NERVA engines, and the nuclear ramjet from Project Pluto (if you haven't heard of it, read here. It's appropriately cold-war and terrifying). Obviously the ramjet only works in-atmosphere, so the only 'tested' NERVA engine we have is the solid core.
