would it be possible to ignore all of the safety limits, melting points, ect to pump like 20 times more power through a laser of the same size for a brief burst? I think that it could be useable to have as a reserve weapon for when things get bad or be used to instantly disable a critical part of the enemy ship. but you would then have to throw the laser away and replace it with another laser. I think that it could be kinda useful if you needed a lighter version of a large laser with the same power but only for a limited amount of time.

soo... a single shot pulse laser? seems pointless it would not be a pulse laser. it would just be a laser that fires until it blows itself up. it would weigh less but be much more powerful than another laser for like 5 seconds

Sounds like smaller versions of capital lasers could be useful for drones. They're single-use anyway so it wouldn't be an issue.

Wasn't there a government project looking into doing this? The pumping source was X-rays from a nuke.
