I've been trying out the auto intercept feature from the new patch in the mission Vesta overkill with the stock ships, but it doesn't seem to be very effective; whenever the enemy fleet manoeuvers I get a message of 'reintercept failed', and have to realign the trajectory just as I would have prior to the patch. I'm not actually sure if I've seen it successfully perform a reintercept yet. Is there a specific method one must use to employ this feature, or does it just not work for all but the most mild manoeuvres?

After some more experimentation, I think the reintercept algorithm just tries to apply the existing interception algorithms from the point on the trajectory where your original auto intercept was; if it can't find a solution then you get a failed reintercept. It sort of acts like a semi terminal stage manoeuver correction, but anything beyond that (long distance midcourse correction) will still require manual correction.
I have found a useful method for taking full advantage of this feature; if the AI starts throwing evasives when your missiles are still a long way off, instead of perfectly lining up another intercept, move your missile trajectory close to the enemy but just short of achieving actual intercept. Then wait until you are close enough to use the auto intercept algorithms to correct for this small discrepancy and guide in onto target. This way you won't have to constantly correct for target evasives, as the AI only evades when missiles have a direct intercept, which by using this method you delay until the auto intercept and its corresponding reinterception algorithms are in play.

I've seen it work in sandbox missions around Vesta. I'm not really sure what the AI is trying to do when it's evading, to be honest, but maybe it's just going for a certain offset angle and expending more dV to do that in deeper gravity wells?

because of this, my missiles make a sprint at the last possible instant to hit the targets. EX: floating a salvo in an orbital path coming within 3-5Mm then burning at closest approach to intercept
