I recently made a few fast-firing sandblaster railguns of different sizes, velocities and projectile energies and found them able to massacre stock ships without trouble, but my own armor composites were far more resilient. When I saw Amimai's (amimai ) armor setup in a thread here I gave a modified version of it a try and lo - with a little bit of sloped armor and no chinks (turrets I can blast off to create openings etc), suddenly these projectile-streams of death were plinking off armor even at close range. Worse, this armor setup barely increased cross-section and resulted in a lot of my ships getting cheaper and lighter.
The only way I could penetrate was through using expensive NEFP and flak missiles, and a veeeery unreliable 1t osmium slug-throwing conventional gun at close range. And it was more likely to explode and kill my own ship (?!). But regular, reliable pewpewing wasn't working. Radiator kills were possible, but sloped armor with a bulging cross-section, low profile radiators and staying face-on let my target ship tank literally millions of shots.
Does anyone have a decent, cost-effective and reliable projectile weapon that can penetrate the armor setups we can put together? I understand lasers can be countered now, and I find the power/radiator setups to make amazing lasers
The armor setups in question:
1)
1cm Amorphous Carbon
1.5cm of Liquid Crystal Polymer.
5.50cm of Amorphous Carbon
.5mm of Diamond (or 1cm of R. Carbon Carbon)
30cm of Boron.
1cm of Iridium
1cm of Aluminium, 1cm spacing.
2) ripoff of Amimai's...
1.5cm of Boron
100cm Graphite Aerogel
5mm Boron
100cm Graphite Aerogel
3mm Amorphous Carbon
.5mm Diamon, 1cm spacing.
Bear in mind this was a tanky ship I put together to test the concept of a resilient non-combat ship, but similar setups on my combat ships were just as tough. Punching through turrets or plinking off radiators was perfectly viable.
