The ship-scale reaction wheels are a bad deal. In that case it generally makes sense to make a minimimal-size, minimal-weight turret. It'll give you the fine-tuning you can't achieve with reaction steering, and it won't weigh like 50% of the ship's overall wet mass.

While we are on this, how about ship steering reaction wheels for ships with fixed guns? Didn't we just talk about why moving big objects with reaction wheels is a bad idea?

For aiming fixed mount lasers you have no option but to use reaction wheels. Thruster valves are not precise enough to steer your ship within arc seconds.

In fact, it is advised to put long range guns on turrets, even ridiculously slow-turning, low-arc turrets, instead of using fixed mounts, because aiming with thrusters is not precise enough. So yeah, reaction wheel fine-tuning and get rid of the turret may be a good idea.

So yeah, reaction wheel fine-tuning and get rid of the turret may be a good idea. all my high-velocity coilgun/launcher designs have the turret the absolute minimum radius possible, with lithium reaction wheels that are basically foil thickness. I try to aim for 2-5 deg/s, and do rough aiming by giving the ship "Homing" orders.
