This does raise the question of what the hell has happened to the West. Russia and Asia and India and Pakistan made it, but not the USA, Brazil, Europe, or even the African Union in some form? India and Pakistan are Asian countries :/

As a guess: Since USTA is made up of NESR and EAM (North Eurasian Socialist Republic and East Asian Conglomerate) a good guess here is that the outer cogs thingy came from flags of those SSR. Soviet republics generally have a round circle of yeast/wheat surrounding a sickle and hammer, And i guess in this case they just glossed that over because they don't plant yeast in space, there's no agriculture anymore, the significance of the proletariat is now made up of only industry workers so no meaning having plants symbolizing farmers. And the center shield could be for putting heraldry, or it had some heraldry originally and then lost its face when mass copies are required. What we see could be a result of simplifying copying over 200 years with people not caring too much what they meant (at least in the beginning). The flag of Nippon Prime is another example, they could have simply used the old imperial battle flag or the current red-dot flag. Probably using a template commonly used for radioactive material simplifies reproduction of the flag??? This does raise the question of what the hell has happened to the West. Russia and Asia and India and Pakistan made it, but not the USA, Brazil, Europe, or even the African Union in some form? It was said some point that those developed nations and ex-USSR states were hit the hardest. So not much population evacuated were,uh,not that much of a surprise. Those elevators were in for it the first wave and you really cannot afford to large-scale space launch your population while fighting a total war, can you. Tho You can argue along that line that Russia made it, blah blah blah, What i think is the problem is that maybe they just coalesced into the more communal/gregarious? indian-pakistan society, which became dominant, as evident in the name list. Especially if they happened to be in a poor position post-apocalyptic. It was mentioned that there were some attempt to rebuild outer space but only Nippon Prime made it(Japan). Having the best pre-war space infrastructure definitely helped. Perhaps there were a provisional USA, Brazil, EU, AU or something but they collapsed and were absorbed into RFP or USTA. These were not stable unions at first (Iroquios) so no surprise. And those first-generation spacers probably could not have cared less about teaching their children "Nationality" as they despised it for causing the WW3. Indeed the old idea of nation-state probably died out quite quickly as the population intermingle. Indeed equating RFP to pakistan or india is a grave injustice as the founding principles must be so different to make a technological-based post-apocalyptic society work. So there you have it. My best guesses.

Random thought: Would a hijab (head scarf) actually be somewhat practical if you want to keep hair from getting in your way in microgravity?
I mean, it doesn't look that much different from the head wraps I've seen in modern space suits.
(though, I'd be figuring that post-cataclysm, post-earth Islam would be fairly different from modern variations - same with Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and so on.)
Great artwork, though!
