So lens caps for lasers are a thing now, governed, I believe, by the armor thickness you put on the turret. When I have my laser off I see the lens cap visually there on the model, but I'm not sure they actually do anything. Even if i put a meter of armor on the turret it seems to get popped off instantly by any laser at any range.
I tried cladding my turret in literally tens of thousands of tons of osmium and my test laser pops it off instantly. It then actually takes several seconds to destroy the aperture - so in fact this meter of osmium is somehow much flimsier than the delicate silver mirror behind it. Maybe it doesn't actually use the turret armor for the lens cap? Either way, caps seem useless as of now.

Consider that the AI targets uncapped lasers specifically if there are any and lasers uncap to shoot. If you are firing a laser the AI will target the turret that is doing the firing and is therefore uncapped.

Faster laser better. Smaller aperture is less wobbly. Less wobbly and more traverse speed gets the photon stream on target faster. Consider an array of small anti laser laser turrets to delete your opponents laser turrets. Then after that feel free to throw yottawatts at your target so cutting it in half doesn't take as long.
Attached is my most effective single laser design. There are some mighty multi laser designs in the thread "Challenge: 750 Ton Wonders!"

That's true, though this is simply flipside of beam defocusing via diffraction, so you get bigger spot with less damaging power. Though when the main issue is actually keeping the beam on small, distant target, or when the narrow beam completely overkills the ablation cap, "worse" beam is actually better because it at least guarantees damage building up on both the target as a whole and its specific targeted spot.
