What's the distance between ships when a fleet spawns in combat? Is it variable? What drives it?

Distance between fleets seems mostly dependent on weapon range although it's sometimes possible to break that.
Distance between ships in fleet seems to vary based on size and number of ships - with large numbers of ships you can get some really tight packings, which is obviously not good.

We need control over this aspect.

I'm interested mostly about this in missile fleets, for some back of the envelope calculations. I was hoping this mechanic was known.

Surely the spacing is variable, or there would be a maximum size limit for ships. I guess this (see image below) is how it works, with the largest craft given a 'bounding cylinder' of uncertain (to us) size, which is also adopted by every other craft in the same fleet. The fleet is circle-packed with equilateral spacing (a bit differently to how modules are packed in ship design). Drones/missiles will be placed in front of capital ships, never the same rank, and will adopt the same spacing as the largest craft in their fleet dictates. It follows that one can space missiles out a lot if they are given or travel with a craft carrying very wide radiators. The amount of craft in one rank of a fleet is capped at 37 (equilateral packing of 3 rings around a centrepiece). Upon exceeding this the craft will be divided into two ranks of... I can't remember, something like 24, with any odd extras being added to another rank at the back, until both ranks are filled up to 37 each. Beyond this the same(?) split will occur again, etc, until your 500 craft fleet is a long tube. Launching missiles in multiples of 37 gives you the broadest cross-section per wave. Note: The actual distances will be about 4 times those shown for normal (about 500-5000m 2) capital ships. Smaller craft may be spaced much more relative to their dimensions (>20 times their diameter) so either there is a lower limit or logarithmic increase in spacing as you go smaller.
