This is the opposite of the old challenge I started with big ships... For this challenge, make a manned warship under 750 tons fully loaded. Pretend that it's being built on Earth and you only have a dozen falcon heavies to use to get it in orbit.

Despite nasty rumors, this is a totally unrelated ship to the AE deep fryer. There are numerous differences: -It can move while firing (with 1/3 MPDs) -It has armor so it can take a few hits from kinetics without blowing up -It has 100 km/s railguns with no payload so it can deal with enemies resistant to lasers far better, and has longer range against missiles -Its lasers are optimized against PE ablation cap so it's less wasteful -It has spare laser turrets since the turrets can be smaller Ship export: jt Deep Cooker.txt (7.28 KB)

Here's a small carrier. 749t, and a shade under 5Km/s deltaV. Primary armament is 170 small railgun drones, with an additional 70 flak missiles and 7 50mm chemguns for point defense. The railgun drones are quite small and optimized for taking out laserstars (or really, anything with exposed radiators) - gun velocity is under 6 Km/s, but they can fire for an extended period, and the drones are small enough to be difficult to hit at extreme range, even with large laser arrays. I have a bunch of under 0.7kt stock ships (I currently have no non-stock designs as they were obliterated by the patch and I decided it will be easier to reconstruct some of them from my stock designs, while the rest had layout features incompatible with current version and will have to be rebuilt from scratch - I had a great just under 0.5kt design but it didn't survive the patch).

None of the AIs are quite ideal for it; "Reckless" is probably the best bet - it launches the the most drones and has the right targeting priorities, but is too aggressive with the carrier itself. "Aggressive" or "Launcher" are also viable - what it really wants to do is closer to Launcher for the capitol ship behaviors and Reckless for drone/missile control and targeting. Fair warning, it does tend to turn into a slideshow (not a full stop, but frame every few seconds) once you have a couple dozen drones firing once a second from 1000 Km out and a bunch of lasers wobbling all over the place trying to hit them. It could probably be improved a bit without even major redesign - a couple releases ago I reworked my entry from the tournament here to be as effective as possible against the winning entry ( apophys Deep Fryer) and I did a quick rearrangement of that to get it under 750t, but I haven't really done a full optimization pass since 1.2. Also, while I labeled most of the items, I didn't use any cleanup scripts or carefully check, so it's possible a few modules still have generic names that could produce conflicts (1Kg Hydrogen tank, etc.).

Inspired by treptoplax, I wanted to also build a carrier in 750 tons, carrying as many micro drones as possible. Ideas on making a micro carrier: Now, microdrones unfortunately have lower bounds on weight -- they have to carry a gun, some ammo, the reactor to power the gun, the control module, the engine and its propellant... or do they? I had this mad idea of trying to make a microdrone that did not have its own propulsion system -- it should be fired towards the general direction of the enemy, and then its turret would do a drive-by shooting as it flies past. This is similar to the gun mine concept posted by Rocket Witch a while back, or what is likely the idea behind the core shooting star drone -- minimal propellant, lots of shooting. Except, in my case, minimal is zero. The initial tests showed something interesting: firing caused the drone to start rotating, which made it really hard to aim. We address this in two ways: 1. Add another turret, to obtain (almost) complete 360 coverage 2. Upgrade the power source to a micro reactor, in order to allow the turret to turn really fast Additionally, we want to keep the diameter of this drone really small, allowing us to fire it more easily. I present you the rotating gun mine, our very own mini space gun shurikens: How do we deliver those to the enemy, you may ask? Use a drone, of course. More specifically: use a drone with a blast module, which becomes considerably lighter after delivering its cargo, and then suddenly becomes a nuclear missile after: Finally, add some KKM-like missiles I had laying around. Yes, there is a nuke, but it is a really small one, really meant to explode inside the enemy ship, not outside. Finally, pack it all together. As the constraint here is *mass*, not cost, apply aramid fiber liberally. This will likely help resist lasers. General advice on usage: The carrier contains 250 gun mine launchers, each of which launches 16 rotating gun mines, for a total potential of 4000 rotating gun mines. The 250 launchers then turn into nuclear missiles with 7 95t nukes. The carrier also carries 400 KKV / nukes. This is quite excessive, and certainly not something you want your CPU to be handling all at once. Launchers were intentionally slowed down to prevent collision, and excessive launches, but you may need to monitor it closely in order to avoid melting your instance of the game. Note that, unlike treptoplax's carrier, this one has absolutely no point defense. The carrier is quite thin and has non-negligible armor; if despite your best efforts you find this carrier on the same combat as the enemy, launch a few gun mine launchers and missiles, and let the gun mines do the point defense / distraction / interference for you. Deciding exactly when to "blow the load" and fire the gun mines from the launchers can be fun, if you don't want to leave it to the automated range process. In my experience, 20 of the gun mine launchers are enough to seriously hamper or kill most stock ships, and a few of the famous core designs by AtomHeartDragon -- if you don't mind having seconds per frame, instead of frames per second. Eh, I wouldn't expect my core designs to be competitive against well designed non-core stuff, especially minimissile swarms. First, I don't really test against anything that has COADE struggle with the same frame both before and after you go out to lunch, second, you really need some nuke based PD against swarms and precise kinetic EM guns can't hurt either. Third, it is really hard to test anything clever using AI - it's not good at preemptive dodging when it should, not good at keeping orientation when it shouldn't dodge, and can't do anything remotely advanced, like switching to backup power and folding radiators before launching flares.
I should probably try rebuilding my non-stock stuff, though I'm still not hyperoptimizing.

I present the "Virtue" Missile Cruiser. Weighing in at 689 tons when fully filled, and costing a mere 3.55 Megacredits, the Virtue is both light and cheap. Nonetheless, it is an extremely effective warship for it's purpose: Destroying enemy death rays. The 120 "Hurricane" antiship missiles carried by the missile cruiser are designed specifically to be highly resistant to laserstar bombardment, allowing a wave of 50-60 to take out the majority of the death rays on the market by targeting the paper thin radiators with kiloton nukes. Defense is provided by a thin layer of antikinetic armor, graphite aerogel, and 250 MW "Flare reactor" blast launchers for antimissile duty. However, the system is not without weaknesses. The Hurricane missile, while potent, expends the majority of its 10 km/s of delta v in order to accelerate more quickly over the deadly laser killzone. This leaves it more vunerable to dodging then other designs, which keep more delta v in reserve. Command thinks this is an acceptable tradeoff, considering the majority of death rays that have been fielded could not dodge an angry snail, and additional utility to take out other lightly accelerating or propellant depleted vessels. ----------------------- The AI can handle this ship. Use the "Ranged" setting. I was testing against a version of the ever famous "Deep fryer:" It never stood a chance.

Weird. It works fine on my machine and my phone. I am not used to linking to images, rather than embedding them, so it is entirely possible I have made a mistake. I am just suppose to link the image, correct? I am using google images, can anyone tell me what they are using so I can try it for troubleshooting purposes? Interestingly just throwing a bunch of those missiles against stock Gunship allows it to pop some with its stock laser. That would be a good reason to not maximize engagement range but set it at somewhere around 100MW/m2 instead.
However, I couldn't get your 50 missile salvo anywhere near 2GW Deep Fryer.

I've been using Google Images too, and put all my CoaDE screenshots in a folder specially flagged as viewable by anybody with the URL.

I've also noticed that stock 100Mw violet laser on the gunship is surprisingly effective against my anti-laser weapons. Maybe its my imagination - I haven't tested this systematically - but it seems as effective if not more than highly optimized player lasers, which barely bother them at long range. Which is odd... Maybe it's got a huge spot size at distance and that helps against tiny targets?
