I didn't realize that gigantic 12.4 GW reactor was meant to be practical. Well then. Since there's actually a desire for even higher power than my 1GW reactor, I feel compelled to upscale my design. Here's 10 GW. It comes at 151 t of mass, so it's marginally more mass efficient than my 1GW (at the cost of ballooned volume, so armoring will suck). In the course of building this, I find that a slightly lower efficiency than the maximum slightly improves the stats here, because of the absurd draw of the inner turbopump at these scales. The thermocouple can be rearranged to have high radius and low height instead of the current high height and low radius. Not sure where to find errors, but I did find that the craft as specified has many intersecting parts when I managed to load it (by incrementally adding more lines to the craft file for whatever reason). The lasers, for one, are gigantic and mostly overlapping. I was able to get the craft functioning after adding many many spacers, though it ends up being absolutely gigantic, as well as effectively stationary. It does make short work of any stock craft, although some basalt fibre armored missiles will ruin it's day.

For the purposes of drones, whats the smallest, hottest RTG we can build? I'm struggling to understand how the P and N materials interact to build my own, and the low exit temp they generate means headaches for radiators. Alternatively, if someone can make a ~10kW reactor, that'd work too. EDIT: I did a thing! This is about as small as i think we're going to be able to get.

Just wanted to weigh in with something I built for a drone idea I entertain. Main design criterion was mass less than a ton and small enough to actually fit on a drone. It is based on the 13.6MW 1.55t design from this thread (sorry, forgot whose it was). Runs up to 2400K. Not currently fit for humans in the vicinity - like in the same solar system - but that should be easily remedied. The outer turbopump didn't make the screenshot. It uses a 7.3cm pump at 6.4kRPM. I'm currently testing a matching laser design. Can't quite get it small enough (yet), but will probably post it in the lasers thread in the not too distant future. Lasers appear a lot harder to do. Very nonlinear optimization. Next up is a decent drive and matching radiators for this beast. Incidentally, does anyone have hints on radiator material selection? Glad you like it!
