I would say that you gotta go fast to avoid any kind of doom , by 250 you mean the ginormous cannons on your dreadnought ? , what would you say if I told you you can have 80km/s on a cannon less than 40t , admittedly with much less accuracy than what you see here, but still perfectly usable. my standard PD rails are 40km/s guns, so yeah I believe you, but the 250km guns are not my designs. working on a 50-60km rail but its getting really heavy A bit more than an hour ago I wouldn't believe myself ... keep in mind that the gun I'm talking about was more than a kiloton before I found... TATAAA the power of graphogel barrel armor might be a bug btw, doesn't make much sense otherwise.

Sound a good explain but why the smallest nuke IRL is order of magnitudes heavier than the one in COADE? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W54This 6 kT nuke is 23 kg in Mass. my latest version was osmium/tantalum (or tungsten, don't remember really) I think it was closer to 25% than this one... I just started from the stock 200kW something reactor and it was molybdenum... frankly my primary concern was weight but the latest version really was closer to the 400kW heat - 100kW electricity of the Safe 400 so that was a bonus.

Thanks, I'm currently trying to reach 400kW heat 100kW power .. damn hard when trying to keep the radiator temperature up and the weight at 512 kg at the same time :\ apopsys would have nailed that from the first time I bet.

I dont know I just wondered where it came from. I just didn't want to put up with calculations so I just wanted to know if there is more from where it came from. Edit: Altough you could just fiddle with the module designer to figure out maxium exhaust velocity instead of difficult calculations Derp. naaah I don't do difficult calculations, way to lazy. Even if I wasn't, I can't MAKE difficult calculations. Anyway. Sorry for the long silence guys, I've been pondering how to handle drones. Propulsion and especially power generation. I mean there is sense in using RTGs for that but frankly the combination of high price and low temperature has been killing any effort I put in to them. So I've gone the "equivalent" way again. For the moment I'm using this : Its supposed to be a Safe-400 equivalent. My heat is a bit up from what I can understand and for the moment its a bit big but the weight, which is my primary concern, is spot on from the data I can find. Also I'm using the radiator temperature from Safe-300 ... how does it all sound to you?

Sorry for the lack of update yesterday. I've been reading and testing. I realised that because of the heavy armor there is a point where the effectiveness of the long engine bells and the higher exaust velocity of more effective fuel mixtures like the LOX/Methane is really counterproductive. So after encountering this useful spreadsheet and reading this I've gone full Hydrogenperoxide/RP1 for both offering me decent enough exaust velocity and very high density. For the devastator I've also found that several smaller fixed engines are giving me better performance because they are so much shorter and do not escalate the armor weight that much. The reduced turning speed did not turned out to be a problem for the moment but I experimented with RCS thrusters to boost it, sadly they turned out to make the missiles much less resistant ot laser fire. However it seemed to me that the RCS was behaving much better than before the patch so great work qswitched ! I'll try to wrap up the new missiles after work and I'll try to post them later today. Where did you get the maximal specific velocity in this spreadsheat from. I saw the spreadsheet in the Solar System Organization of Standardization thread... why is there something wrong in it ?

Sorry this discussion is a bit out of my tech reach. However seems to me that you are missing one thing that tilts the advantage towards small apperature lasers - size and redundancy. A 5cm apperature laser with 11cm turret is very very hard to hit even with another wide beam and you can pretty much seed them on the hull in hundreds if you desire. I don't do it because there seems to be no need to do it - 10 is enough. Not to mention that its way easier to make it very fast. On the tech side, I really don't understand optics very well and I'd like to hear lawson 's take on damage to already working lasers, because he seems to be one of the few members that have practical experience with this. I mean blocking damage to your apperature from what I understand seems easy enough, especially for the flashlights that we use for counter-fire, however if it involves shutting your laser then its good enough for me. Edit: After a brief discussion with deltaV he convinced me that "wide beams" don't actually exist and what I see with small aperture lasers at large distances is really extreme case of wobble. it doesn't change my point however. The practical result is the same.

mm interesting I suppose I'll have to test how it handles doom laser fire. I haven't tested them for a while might have to switch to AM-carbon or rubber ... I don't use modded materials for the moment. If you take the last model and ramp up the barrel back at 100cm you should have the same performance with at the very least 70 tons less weight. The one shown was with 80 cm to allow me a much faster turning turret with minimal decrease of accuracy. Why don't you use modded materials? I could see not using the less tested or realistic things like Graphene and encapsulated fuels but some things like vitreous carbon should already be in the game. At some point I will... thing is that we do enough stuff that stretches the boundaries that I can take for "real world" tech (micro nukes, reactors producing tens of GWs) and with moded materials I fear its going to get worse. Also keep in mind that I have zero engineering/scietific background so what is realistic and unrealistic takes a bit more google-ing for me to get than for you .

I think I already said it a couple of times but I use I couple of drones for this. For a swarm of less than 40 missiles usually one drone is enough. Its an evolution of my old decoy drone with a small laser slapped on it. Thing is that engine gimballs are still very vulnerable especially on small missiles with all the weight savings so a single drone passing through the swarm can kill a lot of missiles, make some of them turn sideways flaunting its hot radiators and they are as sure as dead from the defensive lasers on the capital ship. The ones that do not turn and continue expose their engines to the drone's laser. Drones are then refueled and reused for the next wave. Just made a high acceleration flare/laser drone. With a 65MW heat signature and a 1.4MW pumped laser, it obliterates missile swarms it passes or it gets nuked to hell and protects the mother ship anyway. Next I think I'll see how effective a cost/delta-v optimized version of this drone is if I keep the same laser. Nice . I'll post mine at some point , thing is that one of them revolves around using a wide beam anti-laser and I'm still on shaky ground with that. On one hand I really like what it did to the gameplay . On the other hand I'm not sure how its going to look like after the next patch. The other however has a reasonably large 40cm apperature, however its hideously armored (decorative graphogel) and explodes instantly when deployed in tactical combat. So... I'm not sure they are ready.
