2.Tin -Strong Preformance, cheap. Anyone tried using zinc? About 1.1c/kg cheaper than tin for similar density, but it is harder. I usually use tin as part of an anti-spalling composite layer with diamond on top. I am going to take a closer look at zinc for sure, but I think it's more brittle.

I usually just use 0.5 mm diamond backed by 3.0 mm amorphous carbon for anti-laser Whipple shield, with several dozens cm of graphite aerogel for filling and 3.0mm boron filament as final layer if there's weight to spare. But looking on this thread here, I think I would like to try something different for fun. My standard whipple layering is very similar and I've had good results as well. Diamond > Tin > Graph gel > boron filament

So after playing around with some apophys Electronics modules, I've made pretty good progress on my idea of a dedicated combat laserstar. -snip- I absolutely love the ship as a concept. Though my feelings differ on if I consider it more of an exploit. If there was a supporting structure that could be struck by weapons or a mass cost associated with building struts to push that material out I would have no issues at all.

I've decided that it's time for me to launch my product line on Steam! What I have, so far, is some basic stuff that I'm not too embarrassed about. But please keep in mind that my "company" has a certain design theory and aesthetic, so be gentle. I know that some stuff could be more optimized (although if you see any huge glaring faults, please let me know). steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1085144874

It just seemed like we could already piggyback some sort of customization into the command modules. The base AI is good at doing basic AI stuff, but player-made logic would make more sense for micro-management.
For example, I would want all my drones to switch to homing immediately after they run out of ammo.
Or making a hard maneuver to dodge missiles AND turn off radiators and launch flares seconds before impact.

I don't know if this has been brought up before, so ignore me if it has, but does anyone think that the addition of logic gates or something similar into the remote controls (which could be linked to specific systems) would be very useful?
I just envisioned a ship that could adapt, automatically, to suddenly losing a large amount of power, turning off/on certain weapons or their capacitors, switching off some resistojets to compensate, or other possibilities.
Maybe some good if/then logic to control certain countermeasure priorities? Maybe if the incoming missile count is less than 20, use lasers, if more then use 5 anti-missile nukes unless within a certain distance, then launch flares instead?
Obviously, I'm sure you clever folks could come up with a lot more to do with that ability.
Thoughts?

I appreciate your efforts to bring us the best reactors in the solar system, regardless of distribution.

I saw the post, but since steam integration I would rather just subscribe to apophys' reactors. Just having some fun.

I would like to return the reactor that I purchased from your company several months ago due to a safety recall. Please leave your Steam information so that I might order new reactors. Sincerely, Midnight Industries.

Any more info on the contents? Steam Workshop support will be the biggest change, plus a number of smaller changes. Oh, that will be very nice! I can't wait to subscribe to my favorite reactor companies.

I thought the point of the stock ships were to help you learn, then you start making your own improvements to all components. If the stock ships were already min-maxed, then what would be the point of making your own stuff?

... a laser is very dodgeable at light seconds of range, nevermind light minutes. I have to take issue with this statement. The speed of light is the fastest speed information can travel, that is to say, you can't detect it before it has arrived. You can't dodge a laser because the only way to detect it is when it hits you. AFTER you are hit, you could move out of the way, but if the laser source adjusts aim you couldn't know until you are hit again.

1) 5-10cm Boron 2) 1-5cm Amorphous Carbon -- 10cm gap 3) 1cm Spider Silk 4) 1cm Diamond -- 10cm gap 5) 1cm Spider Silk 6) 1cm Diamond -- 10cm gap 7) 1cm Spider Silk 8) 1cm Diamond -- 10cm gap 9) 1cm Spider Silk 10) 1cm Diamond I can't be bothered to armor a ship against mega death guns/lasers. I just like having some resistance to sand blasters and standard missiles and spend most of my resources on weapons to kill the other guy first. Does that reliably resist sandblastes fairly well? It's all a matter of what you want out of your armor. I have a budget I'm always trying to stay within (self-imposed, obviously). Diamond does well against most thermal issues / shocks incoming kinetic rounds, the spider silk seem to work well for anti-spalling, and the multiple layers takes a lot to break up with sand blasters (very rare to get multiple shots in same hole. The amorphous carbon soaks up any leftover heat and the boron provides a nice back stop. But most importantly... all the materials are cost-effective and fit within my budget.
