If you want your vessels as stock replacements, then it might be a good idea to diversify the layout a bit. You obviously have your own 'style' and school of thought about ship layout and proportions, but some variety might be good. Perhaps check out what kind of ship layout other people use? We are still at the gunship, laser frigate and the corvette - all direct combat ships with a more or less similar layout. The stock layouts there are not very diverse either. The more indirect oriented ships will probably look very different.

Ok this little fugly thing is the most successful of my versions of the Raider. I allways found the raider an interesting but ultimately flawed design. Several things bug me about it - for example, why does it have 13MWs of power when it does nothing with them? I'm finding the idea of a very armored bow attractive , but on the other hand everything else is completely exposed and the ship has only one large tank and if its hit, it can't maneuver and is ultimetely doomed because its only armor points forward and also it's most effective weapons are useless, it doesn't simply desintegrate when hit. So my first knee jerk reaction was to widen the bow to shorten the ship and hide everything behind it... like this : The first raider redesign was effective and resulted in a ship that was trashing 1 and 2 raiders without any problem , however even with the very thick bow armor was getting punctured from time to time and that usually resulted in a spinning ship that was dead meat if unable to reestablish its proper orientation in time. The I decided that I can't leave it completely exposed from the sides and added an additional layer of 1cm Carbon-Carbon under most of the ship with the usual aluminum whipple shield. It gave it the ability to survive for a few seconds untill it can recover its proper orientation after loosing a tank. I swapped the 4mm railguns in front with the mini 2mm 200kw Coilguns - they were much harder to disable , and this is essential because if the AI looses its bow weaponry it tends to rotate to the broadside and dies quickly. Main weapons are an armored version of the CIWS 1MW Railgun that go in place of the 60mm conventional cannons on the original. The Raider redesign III was extensively tested , it was consistenlty winning against 3 Raiders. I did a few duels with corvettes that were very close matched, most of the time the new raider was winning but it was a very very close thing: It was battling patrol ships , marauders , cutters and corsairs and was winning. 3 cutters proved to be a problem however since it was loosing its weapons before being able to hit back. There was a fourth version that was slimmer and closer to the original , however even if it was effective in tests against raiders it died quickly against version III had lower delta V and only one crew compartment instead of 2 that resulted in a few loses. Also it was consistenlty loosing to version III so I just left it out. So the Raider was interesting but I really don't consider it a very effective ship. The thick armor in the front is still easily punctured by those long streams that the 60mm conventional stock cannons are vomiting around. I wasn't able to increaase the slooping to much without increasing the weight and price way out of the requirements. I'm not sure if we are still seeing the old "wide armor" bug here. Code is here :

Also in other news the rearmament program is going in a full swing. I did a deliberatly innaccurate radiator buster version of the 4mm and a much more heavy hitting 5g 13MW version without sacrificing accuracy and fire rate. Infact the new 13MWs are hitting accurately even drones at very significant distances. A few battle shots : The rearmed versions of the laser frigate and the gunship can now consistently win against 3 ot their stock brethrens and I was able to properly specialize them - the laser frigate has more CIWS and scatter guns and the gunship has considerably more punch with the new heavy hitters. They do well against small combined fleets with laser frigates, gunships, fleet carriers and few smaller ships - not a 100% win all the time but in a fleet battle with one ship a lot can go wrong. I swapped the 4mm railguns in front with the mini 2mm 200kw Coilguns - they were much harder to disable , and this is essential because if the AI looses its bow weaponry it tends to rotate to the broadside and dies quickly. Main weapons are an armored version of the CIWS 1MW Railgun that go in place of the 60mm conventional cannons on the original. The Raider redesign III was extensively tested , it was consistenlty winning against 3 Raiders. I did a few duels with corvettes that were very close matched, most of the time the new raider was winning but it was a very very close thing: It was battling patrol ships , marauders , cutters and corsairs and was winning. 3 cutters proved to be a problem however since it was loosing its weapons before being able to hit back. There was a fourth version that was slimmer and closer to the original , however even if it was effective in tests against raiders it died quickly against version III had lower delta V and only one crew compartment instead of 2 that resulted in a few loses. Also it was consistenlty loosing to version III so I just left it out. So the Raider was interesting but I really don't consider it a very effective ship. The thick armor in the front is still easily punctured by those long streams that the 60mm conventional stock cannons are vomiting around. I wasn't able to increaase the slooping to much without increasing the weight and price way out of the requirements. I'm not sure if we are still seeing the old "wide armor" bug here. Code is here :

Also in other news the rearmament program is going in a full swing. I did a deliberatly innaccurate radiator buster version of the 4mm and a much more heavy hitting 5g 13MW version without sacrificing accuracy and fire rate. Infact the new 13MWs are hitting accurately even drones at very significant distances. A few battle shots : The rearmed versions of the laser frigate and the gunship can now consistently win against 3 ot their stock brethrens and I was able to properly specialize them - the laser frigate has more CIWS and scatter guns and the gunship has considerably more punch with the new heavy hitters. They do well against small combined fleets with laser frigates, gunships, fleet carriers and few smaller ships - not a 100% win all the time but in a fleet battle with one ship a lot can go wrong. gedzilla it has increased , but I don't think its so significant , compared to the hiding of the radiators and the increased delta V. the gunship has gone from 4200 to a bit above 5500, the laser frigate is significant but the radiators were bigger proportionally to the hull , 5000 from 3500 , and the raider has decreased , from 1200 to 1000.

I find the autofire railgun to be mostly ineffective. The really effective weapon (though usually only in retaliation after demise) is the sniper coilgun.
If I can disable those rapidly then I can weather minutes of almost completely ineffective fire from the other types as the dispersion is too high to saturate the frontal target at long ranges. The coilgun has a similar level of accuracy to the guns I favour, albeit with a much lower velocity (mine ~44km/s or more) and iirc a heavier shot.
Holding fire until the enemy has set their intercept burn and then engaging gives faster ttk of the coilguns, and brings all armament into the strike areas of the incoming fire, rather than missing against a crossing/accelerating target. The most recent engagement of a gunship (modified to give a pointier nose) resulted in one hit from the coilguns, which removed a large proportion of my radiators and two hits from the autofire coilguns which had no effect.

I think you will fall in love with it. A bit less speed than the sniper coilgun but 32ms fire rate , much better accuracy than my ciws (that outrange the sniper btw) , a much smaller turret 15tons compared to 100. The feeling is like you have taken the 60mm stock cannon and given it some much needed speed. It digs through armor and goes to the other side.

I find the autofire railgun to be mostly ineffective. The really effective weapon (though usually only in retaliation after demise) is the sniper coilgun. If I can disable those rapidly then I can weather minutes of almost completely ineffective fire from the other types as the dispersion is too high to saturate the frontal target at long ranges. The coilgun has a similar level of accuracy to the guns I favour, albeit with a much lower velocity (mine ~44km/s or more) and iirc a heavier shot. Holding fire until the enemy has set their intercept burn and then engaging gives faster ttk of the coilguns, and brings all armament into the strike areas of the incoming fire, rather than missing against a crossing/accelerating target. The most recent engagement of a gunship (modified to give a pointier nose) resulted in one hit from the coilguns, which removed a large proportion of my radiators and two hits from the autofire coilguns which had no effect. Minor thing, I add a remote control to every crewed ship, so they can keep fighting in a limited capacity when when crew module is destroyed.

Question about the weaponry: I compared this to the stock overhaul ships (you know, the pretty ones by astronavigator,) and they beat yours, because they had almost twice as much range. I have to see what the Astronavigator is doing , but the purpose of this particular stock overhaul is to avoid what we usually do , minmaxing and taking everything to the extreme to gain an advantage. Those ships have to be as "Stock"-y as possible. I'm even stretching this with the custom guns too much , I would prefect if I was going 100% stock parts. Its an exercise in layout design mostly. The materials are also specifically stock. And in the process I'm learning things, for example the abovementioned 13 MW cannon is effective beyound what the numbers tell me, and I'm currently trying to find out why. So, no needle guns, nor rad shield guns. No 10GW reactors. No radiators operating at 2500-2600K. No engines with throat radius of less than 1cm. No fluorine. No exotic armor compositions (even my beloved graphite aerogel). I have to see what I'll do with the lasers, in my normal ships I have embraced the anti-laser clusters with both hands I have to check what happened with the discussion about their realism and I'll act on it. With the missiles its a bit more peculiar because I don't see a point of the stock ones being strictly monopropellant. I'm currently testing several missiles with LOX/RP1 that are gaining significant advantage over the stock ones , however certain things - like the external tanks are not utilized effectively by the AI, so the missile tests would probably have to deviate from my untill now strict AI vs AI testing. No NTR missiles. No 380g 95t mini nukes that I so much love. My nukes for the moment follow the dimentions and weight of real warheads. Edit: If you go back a bit you can see that at one point I tested the first gen gunship against a small gunboat that is generally the smallest ship I use. Its ten times smaller , has only two guns , a few small lasers , a few interesting drones and that's it. There wasn't even thinking about the gunship winning it has lost its weapons way before being able to return fire so not even one projectile reached the gunboat. However the gunship survived. I was really surprised.

I love the stock missile schooner, plenty of punch with no nonsense. Very elegant lines. As you can see I haven't really changed much on the ship itself. A bit heavier. More engines. A bit shorter. More power. Internaly and weapons wise it has nothing to do with the original however. First what the original desperately needed was some kind of point defence. I added 200kW version of the 4mm CIWS gun that I use. Nothing fancy but there isn't much power on the ship and I liked it that way. The main thing however are the new 21MW 5s flare missiles : This missile is the simplest answer I could come up with to the problem how to deliver the flare close enough to the target missile in order to be effective. Cannons would be nice but they will be ineffective in the hands of the AI. Aside from the annoying tendency to attack the enemy with them from time to time, they work like a charm: As you can see the launcher is at the bow of the schooner, you can see the enemy devastators and flaks boosting to the front and ultimetly wasting their delta V. The MWs of the flare are enough to lure the enemy away since the schooner is relatively cold target , however if her engines are working they tend to be hotter, so the additional acceleration helps - it makes the AI fire its engines in short bursts so the flares are much more effective. The ship packs 500 of the flare missiles. The offensive punch is provided by 500 smaller flak missiles and 100 redesigned strikers : As you can see the flak missle is significantly smaller than the original, this is achieved by ditching the stock nithromethane in favour of RP1/LOX bipropellant. Also I use 5 times lighter dual warhead- one that drops 1000 1g fragments with wide spread and one that drops 30x33g fragments on a much narrower cone. This is a revival of an old solution to get maximum penetration and maximum spread for radiator busting at the same time. It tends to be very effective, as you can see from the fireworks: The frist two shots are from premature detonations but hell they look good . Frankly I like it significantly more then the new striker... it just ... strikes better. Now for the striker - the warhead was a problem. My normal bread and butter warheads are the 300/400g 95t nukes and they are... very very non-stock. So the solution was to dig info about the smallest nuke that I know of, the W54 , specifically the mk 54 SADM since its much more powerfull and more modern. From here I've got the rough proportions and weight, because of the way the nuke designer is working are a bit off - its 44cm instead of 60 and 22cm instead of 40 , but the weight is spot on 26kg. The warhead looks hideously heavy for me but its still smaller than the stock one and its as realistic as I can make it. All launchers and ammo storage are placed at the front of the ship and are as close to each other as possible for the sake of additional realism. I briefly tried versions of the missiles with droptanks but the AI doesn't know how to use them and I left them without. Most battle tests were done with a single redesigned schooner against 2 stock ones, a laser frigate and a silo ship. Later a gunship was added. The silo ship has the tendency to try to use devastators for defence and occasionally just fried the whole AI fleet. Code :

Concretedonkey I am loving your progress so far. I fully agree that 100% min-maxed ships (while fun) are not the best approach to realism. While it's fun to run around with reactors that are 1 or 2 Kelvin away from meltdown I don't see an actual navy using such materials.
I've had a thought about certain propellants though. It's my understanding that fuels like RP-1 are made from refined petroleum. If Earth is dead, where are the oil wells? I've been avoiding propellant ts like that for this reason, usually sticking to pure Methene or Nitromethene for certain missiles. I'd imagine fuels like these could easily be produced through either the sabatier process or an future-enhanced biofuel method.
But that's off topic. Any thoughts on what ship you might do next?

Hmm you may be right. I've gone to RP1 for realism but frankly haven't thought about production in space. I may revise them. Nearly to the end there were 3 concurrent designs , one was LOX/Methane, one was Hydrogenperoxide/RP1 and in the middle was the one that you see the LOX/RP1. I wanted to try RP1 because I frankly never tried it before. I may rework them as LOX/Methane. Other than that I think I'll try the Silo ship. Large missiles are new to me and the thought about trying to make the devastator design ... really devastating was interesting.
