Tired of gun barrels evaporating to enemy laser fire? Annoyed at the fact that even 10cm Amorphous Carbon barrel armor does very little? Introducing the Warden (4th edition!) Initially concieved after discussions with the tenacious shurugal , the Warden is a gun-turret system designed to circumvent the lack of composite barrel armor technology. Though it's performance has fallen off dramatically since the 1.08 Aerogel Nerf, it is still one of the most powerful kinetic weapon systems available that has a decent amount of laser resistance and doesn't cost megacredits. Now offered in this affordable (and quite cute, I must add) terminal stage drone: *Drone Carrier sold separately. Not packaged for individual sale. Also, something is seriously wrong with payload handling in the game. By adding a 48.9 meter spacer, the greatest-minmaxer alive Apophys has managed to improve my Needlegun. This... makes no sense at all. Adding an external spacer to the payload shouldn't affect it's characteristics at all, let alone positively. Kudos to both apophys and tessfield (mostly Apophys )for their aid.

Pfttt ahaha.
I actually tried to make a thick silica gel armored spheroid gun before as a joke but didn't really use because it's too damn expensive.
Guess you managed to actually make the damn thing works.

Guess you apophys managed to actually make the damn thing work s. There. I fixed that for you. *I* never managed to get the gun over 18km/s, and that required way too much power (because I only had a good understanding of how to use Carbon in coilgun design, derp). My 'practical' design was 5MW & 15 km/s (because I said f*** it, make it a railgun). Even with the improvements, I'm uncertain the system is actually very useful... Well, the drone can survive fairly close range nuclear bursts, and the radiators are armored + 50% redundant too, so... lasers backliners to kill any missile streams, nukes to clear out the micromissile flood, and these close-combat armored gun-drones kill any bus-stages/heavy missiles set up with pure anti-laser armor, while soaking up enemy laser fire. Not cost effective, but useful in Apophy's anti-capital 'Decapitation Assault' strategem. Now, I challenge you guys to make the most adorable combat viable craft ever! Have I succeeded in your challenge? Is my drone not adorable?

Very cool. Maybe the spacer means that the game will distribute the sabot over a much longer area, and so you get to speed it up more? Or, more likely, it is broken.
This did give me the idea of making a payload which is just a series of needles on top of each other (series, not parallel). I can make it go pretty fast, without spacers, but I haven't yet made something that I'm proud to show -- maybe someone can take this idea and run with it?

Spacers being broken don't sound surprising to me. One of these days I made a "spacership", it's like 2 different entities connected by pure magic. Not as useful as a 200km/s gun though...

I noted that spacer/payload goof with a lightweight 1 gw gun. Seemed that a spacer a meter long behind the payload made it work quite a bit better. I do have to assume there's an invisible sabot, which reduces the beam deflection and makes these guns viable.
Love to see the build on that big needlegun!

I think we should get a displayed metric for how fast the weapon can turn in tangential velocity, not (just) angular velocity -- just looking at that picture I have no idea if that turn velocity is enough at that range. Though I guess it is too small.

Here's my own variant inspired by the cheesiness of this thread. My secret sauce is the projectile: rather than using a flak explosive, I just used the smallest / lightest possible rad shield -- made out of Lithium -- and wrapped it, along with a 49.9m spacer, as a payload. Not so secret sauce though -- here's the code for everything I used above. RadiationShieldModule Pill UsesCustomName true Composition Lithium Dimensions_m 0.001 0.001

How does it fare against diamond/carbon/stuffing/boron/spall-liner composite?

How does it fare against diamond/carbon/stuffing/boron/spall-liner composite? I had created it context of defeating apophys' Gladiator on the battle thread. No fragmentation on the projectile, but turns out that just one hit was still enough. It still manages to kill this test ship with the armor composite -- and to crash my executable in the process, too.
