AtomHeartDragon Thanks for playing through and sharing your thoughts. With Steam Workshop support nowadays, I could very well add (and take submissions/suggestions for) core module ships to replace the vanilla fleets with ease, along with custom AI, and share it all as one download. IMO core module only overhauls of core ship types, conserving delta-v, budgets and overall idea would make a good start. I can (and actually like to - apart from engines) work with core modules, but typically end up with things that are very different from stock designs (more effective, though), more crowded, and suffer a bit from variety pack syndrome. I would love to see Sentinel used in a mission, if only because it's an interesting concept, but the joke here is that at very high intercept velocities in orbit roboteching is not just possible but inevitable. Basically, you have two ships firing their guns while also passing each other at velocity that exceeds or at least is comparable with their weapons' exit velocities. To even hope to score hits they must lead each other by significant amount and, obviously, both are leading in the opposite direction. This means that there is inevitably going to be a large angle between the direction a ship fires in and direction it is fired upon from, which is not-very-fun if all your armour faces the same direction as your main battery: (Not that it would help much against barrage of combustion gun or large coilgun heavy slugs travelling at over 30km/s anyway.) Maybe a Phalanx or an Escort Carrier used defensively would work - a screen of drones setting up a blanket of defensive fire? Aww. I will drop it then (and restore my own backup of levels.txt) - was fun while it lasted.

I wonder if using something like diff + patch, albeit cygwin one , or maybe some WinDiff abomination, would help moving the changes from that version to current. Knowing exact original CoaDE version from which attached in OP Levels.txt originates, I may be able to look into that.

I wonder if using something like diff + patch, albeit cygwin one , or maybe some WinDiff abomination, would help moving the changes from that version to current. Knowing exact original CoaDE version from which attached in OP Levels.txt originates, I may be able to look into that. Jan 2017 (date of OP) should correspond with version 1.0.8.

Retaking Ceres: Customisation enabled, per a line in the briefing that claims the player's fleet is customisable (and just for fun). Laser Skiff added to improve the enemy's point defences, since normally a one-two punch of Flak Missiles to the Laser Frigate followed by drones to take out the rest of the fleet provides a very simple means of completion. The heat signature of the Laser Skiff is low enough to be concealed by decoys, in theory (in practice only the Beamcraft is cold enough while firing, but it can't destroy missiles). Since the old briefing line "You have at your disposal a small fleet that you may customize" now is "You have at your disposal a small fleet", I removed the ability to customize the fleet, but I left the enemy Laser Skiff in. Main Belt Extraction: No changes to the enemy fleet — I don't know if this will affect the mission scripting, and the story isn't very permissive of a larger enemy force in this mission. Default allied fleet changed to a Laser Skiff and a Raider to increase difficulty by lowering the mass and cost limit (which is determined automatically by the default fleet's parameters rounded up to the nearest 100t & 10Mc). As per Rocket Witch modifications. Your mission budget now is 3.3 kt (27.5% of the original 12.0 kt) and 50 Mc (22.(72)% of the original 220 Mc). Against a Gunship (11.7 kt and 286 Mc). And without module design. I'll let you people decide if this is too hard. Vesta Overkill: Marauder added (I think it suits Ms. Overkill). Marauder added to the enemy fleet and changed the Support Carrier for an Escort Carrier for the allied fleet (lower budget). On the Surface of Giants: The Methane Depot is now defended by a Sentinel. I thought of using the Laser Station for this but it wouldn't be a consistent threat since it lacks all-round weapons coverage and stations can't reorient to face incoming opponents. Instead of a Sentinel, I put a Phalanx as per AtomHeartDragon suggestion. Solar Ties: Missile Schooner and extra Cutter added; Corvette replaced with Gunship. This should really feel like NP are throwing everything they have at Venus, since their defeat here is a major blow, and at least for myself the increased mass limit made this mission much easier than Vesta Overkill. Dusk Over Triton: Orbital Attack Craft and Orbital Defense Craft added to first fleet. Ranger added to second fleet. Some small capitals to make the fleets look less bizzarely overspecialised considering they represent the majority of the USTA presence around Neptune. The Jovian Lunar Tour: Position of one Marauder swapped with the Cutter to make enemy composition more balanced. The Fall of Titan: The enemy fleet is now composed of two Fleet Carriers, two Missile Schooners, two Rangers, one Solar Lance. A grand finale with a massive wall of crap flying at you as soon as you come near Titan. These I left as Rocket Witch intended. The Jovian Lunar Tour is a bit annoying as it is because the Marauders tend to polish turrets and radiators off the only ship you have. I did not test the missions to see how easy/hard they are, but I made sure the mod now works. Have fun. Main Belt Extraction: No changes to the enemy fleet — I don't know if this will affect the mission scripting, and the story isn't very permissive of a larger enemy force in this mission. Default allied fleet changed to a Laser Skiff and a Raider to increase difficulty by lowering the mass and cost limit (which is determined automatically by the default fleet's parameters rounded up to the nearest 100t & 10Mc). As per Rocket Witch modifications. Your mission budget now is 3.3 kt (27.5% of the original 12.0 kt) and 50 Mc (22.(72)% of the original 220 Mc). Against a Gunship (11.7 kt and 286 Mc). And without module design. I'll let you people decide if this is too hard. I can fairly reliably take out a Gunship with 0.6kt stock module vessel and survive, without killing majority of Gunship's crew, and that's with following constraints: - Gun range battle (would be even easier with just a missile bin with engine, that doesn't ever approach gun range)
- Reasonable delta-v budget on the ship (>4km/s)
My perspective on what is a reasonable challenge level might be skewed. For the reference, my VO mass budget with same constraints would be around 2.5kt. Ooh, tell me how and if it works out.

I managed to win Retaking Ceres with the added enemy Laser Skiff, but it was a Pyrrhic victory. The beam drones and the carrier's decoys worked as great as ever against the enemy drones and missiles. Then I sent all of my missiles and drones in a single huge wave and managed to kill the Escort Carrier and the Laser Skiff (and I realized that ship prioritization doesn't really work, only subsystem prioritization). Then I engaged the remainder of the enemy fleet with my ships, but only the Support Carrier survived, and with a lot of subsystems disabled, including all methane tanks. I'm thinking about tuning down the enemy fleet again, but I'll wait other people's feedback. 2.5 kt for Vesta Overkill might be too little for a hard-difficulty campaign. Maybe you need a special AtomHeartDragon-difficulty campaign or something Unfortunately the Phalanx just sat there doing nothing. Then I realized the enemy had no AI. I put a balanced one and the Phalanx separated into its own fleet. Not only that, but probably you would have to chase down and destroy all the enemy drones and missiles, in deep neptunian orbit, before the game logic considers the mission a success. So I currently don't see any alternative to giving the enemy a ship that has only guns, but I'm open to suggestions. Editing the levels.txt file was easy, I used Meld and compared the difference between the levels.txt of the current patch and the levels.txt file provided by Rocket Witch with his/her modifications. It was easy to figure out which modifications were done by qswitched and which by Rocket Witch and update the file accordingly.

If not, then something small, methane propelled, armed with as many 60mm cannons as possible (ignoring range) would be a good idea. Maybe a humble laser skiff? kdiff3 or bust. (I have always liked Meld's look, though.)

I haven't tested all the stock AI types yet to see if it is possible to keep drones and/or missiles with the fleet and ignore range on guns. The game keeps crashing when viewing the ending, but no crash logs are generated. Do you guys have the same problem? Can it be fixed?
Regarding the last mission, the enemy launched some drone and missile fleets when I got close to Titan, but instead of actually intercepting me, they just burned almost all of their dV changing their orbit orund Titan. So I intercepted the main fleet with a single custom ship at guns range (no missiles, no drones, but it has lots of stock guns, stock lasers, stock decoys and heavy frontal armor) and noticed that: - the solar lance's laser got shot down pretty quickly, the ship was useless (IIRC someone said that the solar lance is a bad joke, but I don't remember who said that or where I saw it written).
- the missile schooners are useless because stock missile launchers have an engagement range of 10 km and their only other weapons are 60 mm cannons; basically their tactic was to try to ram my ship and distract me.
- the rangers didn't do much either.
- the fleet carriers are the real damage dealers: their drones swarmed me after my laser turrets were polished. Here is a pic (Google Drive), I'm counting 60+ drones.
After I dealt with the main fleet, I had to intercept the remaining missile and drone fleets. The missile fleets were either brain-dead or had 1 m/s of dV left because they didn't bother using their engines at all, even after I intercepted them. The drone fleets were nicer and run out of dV on their own, probably because they were scared after I dealt with so many of them.
I'm thinking about changing the enemy fleet to 1 fleet carrier, 1 gunship, 1 laser frigate, 1 corvette, 1 escort carrier and 1 missile schooner for a few less drones and way more sniper CGs and lasers.

The game is really lacking some good stock designs. All of them are far from not only super-optimized designs (which is fine), but any reasonable player-built warship. I usually strongly insist on player and AI being under equal consequences and rules, but I think that's not the case - the AI really needs something to force the player to design his own ship. Solar Lance is the best missile catcher I've ever seen. You can't miss even if you want to. In the vanilla campaign half of the enemy fleet around Titan got wiped after the single nuke salvo only due to the Lance caught all the missiles that could miss due to flares.
I have very high expectations on such a mod. The only thing I can strongly recommend is to not set too low mass/cost budgets, because that will kill the player fleet variety. It's more wise to make an enemy stronger.

Haven't played this modified Levels.txt yet, still I think that this is the right topic to ask:
We know that "Retaking Ceres" and "Vesta Overkill" are kinda hard, with the latter being harder than the former, right? But on the other side of spectrum... Can anyone please share his/her view on the easiest battle missions in stock campaign ranked on a scale from "piece o'cake, uninteresting" to "I think this is just a little bit too easy and should be made half-a-notch harder" along with supposed reasons for them being like that? TIA.

Ceres can be retaken using missiles only. It isn't hard. VO is "mediocre", since there's no advanced path planing and your fleet isn't significantly weaker than the enemy. The only difficulty is how to deal with missiles/drones, but if you take the enemy down quickly, you can evade (almost) all of them using your dV.
0. Everything before Ceres has to be considered as a tutorial and thus remain unchanged, except...
1. Force Projection. The funny thing is that Vanhanen's fleet is more vulnerable due to the retrograde orbit. It has to be more defense-capable, additional Cutter or two should be fine. 2. Solar Ties. This is an easy walk itself, not only in contrast with VO. The mission has to take place on higher orbit, since: 2.1. AI is bad in planning paths in such a deep gravity well, and most of its missiles and drones are being wasted 2.2. There's no objective reason to enter low orbit once you want to establish control over celestial body Those are ones which I consider too easy to fit into the purposed concept, not into my own vision. I think they are meant to be harder than they are.
Lots of low difficulty issues can be also solved by a proper stock crafts redesign. Give them flares, decent powerplants and thrust, and combat missions will significantly change.

Unless you aggressively micro, missiles become ineffective after taking out Laser Frigate because they can then be spoofed by carrier's decoys. RC is mostly about teaching the importance of peeling away enemy defence onion and weapons' relative strengths and preferred velocities matrix, and it does seem to be a massive difficulty spike for many players because it no longer involves just plotting intercept and throwing stuff at the enemy. If you customize your fleet and ships (and Homecoming seems to really drive the point that you should do that whenever you can) drones and missiles are non-issue and stock capships can be easily outclassed, 2.5kt is really all you need and that's assuming stock modules, pure CQB and general purpose design with stock-like delta-v. The difficult part is learning to build good stuff. Retrograde and lasers don't mix well. The main problem with ST is that it uses awful Hiveship and kinda crappy Corsair. A lot of later missions generally take place in deep gravity wells where stock designs' susceptibility to high velocity retrograde drive-bys is easily exploited. True.

The most tough guys there are orbital attack/defense crafts. While being useless, they are pretty tanky against missiles and conventional guns. So you may run out of missiles earlier than you kill a last immobilised OA/OD craft, and will be forced to launch a pair of drones to finish him.
It's supposed to be so, but the enemy defense is very weak and the only defense-capable craft in fleet is a Laser Frigate, which isn't able of holding a missile salvo on its own. The mission design is broken due to the poor fleet composition and crafts not able to perform in designated role.
My assumptions are being made based on stock fleets. Any custom stuff completely outclasses whole fleets of stock crafts, and is a very hard topic to discuss and build a mission around.
Let me correct: retrograde and defensive combat don't mix well. That's a purely attack strategy, but the mission is being built around this and thus it should remain there.
Everything else will work worse as PDW there, since lasers do not suffer accuracy and lag issues, and 13 MW itself is a pretty good stock specimen. Aside from adding a single Cutter, I would place Vanhanen's orbit significantly higher to slow down engagements. This should also better reflect the defensive character of Vanhanen's strategy, since engagement speeds (rapidly) and your free dV (not much, but still) decrease with the orbit height.
Problems begin much earlier, when the enemy missiles and drones cannot even reach you due to the moronic flight planning and immediate burning of their dV. The enemy fleet is also very tight in maneuvers due to the high gravity, higher orbit is intended to introduce more maneuvering into combat.

My guess would be that that Strikers homing onto frigate managed to flash off carriers crew radiators making it unable to act in combat - including launching decoys - and allowing just missile-ing everything dead. This isn't something you can reliably count on, though. Because stock ships are flying bricks of armour with a bunch of weapons stuck on the outside as an afterthought. OTOH building your own stuff is 3/4 of the fun in this game and you shouldn't have been able to so massively outclass stock designs without using custom modules. If it was up to me I would only unlock module design after beating the campaign, but ship design - the earlier the better. Apart from fixing stock designs it can only be addressed by scaling the fleets to the custom expectations. Lasers in particular need time to chew up incoming munitions and lasers alone don't gain any noticeable advantage from retrograde intercepts. Guns and missiles pack more punch and are harder to avoid. In fact if effective range wasn't fixed by target size but modified by closing velocity kinetic PD could just start firing from further away. Yes, retrograde is stupid defensively (although if player had flying flashlight and the enemy missiles and kinetics retrograde would make for good defence - attack and defence are fluid where you don't have territory) but lasers are particularly disadvantaged by it. That's a good idea when you have lasers.

The frigate was taken down by flaks The truth is much more trivial. On high-speed engage flares have no time to fly far away enough to make Carrier safe, and it suffers splash damage a lot. You may notice it by aluminium sheating vaporized away from high area.
1. Yes, your own stuff is fun, but I recommend (for myself at least) to enjoy all aspects of the game, since doctrines may differ massively depending on a tech level you assume
2. Soloing VO by a stock module craft looks like outclassing So neither kinetics in defense. Kinetic weapons have spread and lag, and lag is really an issue since AI fires at a target until it is dead. The punch they deliver doesn't matter much aganst missiles which are fragile. Lasers are precise, lagless against missiles and superior at frying drones on distance. 100 MW + 13 MW is a very powerful anti-missile PDW, especially coupled with Cutter flares.
I have mentioned Cutter since it is much better as a PDW craft than a Laser Frigate. I don't know why, but the Frigate in Force Projection sucks and is able to burn only 6-10 missiles at 2.6 km/s engagement speed. I've played in sandbox for a bit, and LF + Cutter were able to wipe 50 missile salvo almost completely at 3.3 km/s engage.
I haven't discovered it now, and have noted it when during VO my 80 missile salvo was wiped completely by this small craft. Can anyone explain, why is it so massively superior to a Laser Frigate?
