Folks should note that in the Capital Ship Armor thread and the Post Your Designs threat, there's already been some research and design into KKVs, as well as explosively formed penetrators, both conventional and nuclear. This is a design (mine) for a very small and lightweight KKV and CEFP missile which can kill the stock laser frigate in one shot, fired from 0 relative velocity. The KKV, at max velocity, has an impact energy of around 121 MJ, if my math is correct. That's about...28 kilos of TNT, I think? Both variants can penetrate 50cm of reinforced carbon composite. This is a design for a NEFP missile. I haven't played with them personally, however, another design has shown the ability to penetrate five meters of osmium armor. This is the smallest KKV I've been able to come up with; it's still fairly effective against stock designs, though it suffers if it's fired at anything but the furthest extent of its range. I personally recommend EFP designs over KKVs. My math suggests that conventional EFPs are probably less effective than KKVs fired at long range, but the explosive boost to the penetrator makes them effective along a wider range bracket, while still retaining the extremely focused impact damage which makes KKVs so difficult to armor against.
