I just discovered a neat little trick , it seems that the game allows you to stick two types of modules on the stern of the ship if your armor is thick enough. On the shot you can see both the 90 degree RCS NTRs and the MPDs on the stern of the ship - or atleast I hope you can see them , I can't zoom more.

I've found that if you have a sufficiently large module type in an even number (or whatever radial pattern allows for an open circle) you can place on or more smoller modules in the center. Works well with superlasers and small flak/railguns

Does this also work with say, a flare launcher and NTR's?

Yeah I noticed that too, it works with radial engines as well as long as the gimbal is superior to 45degree if I recall correctly.

Maybe apropos of this...Managed to get the rear facing NTR placed alongside the nuclear powerplant somehow. The gimbals are actually inside the reactor thermocouple. Moving the thrusters back one notch puts them with the gimbals below the reactor, but this adds a nontrivial number of meters to the ship length, so I cheese while possible. EDIT: On a huh, that's funny: Start: 1 - thrusters in line with reactor (bugged?) Move thrusters down one notch: 2 - thrusters below reactor (as is proper) Move thrusters up one notch: 3 - thrusters level with reactor, pointing out (proper, but mostly useless as primary thrusters) Move thrusters down one notch: 4 - back to start.

Hah nice, seems that quite a lot of people have found it. I'm finding it superior to broadside/stern or bow/stern mounting for engines... have to try it with lasers sounds quite convinient too.
