Like lasing rods. Our reactors are constantly putting out power so it would be nice to explore some storage options. A ship could carry an entire bank of caps and discharge relatively powerful weapons quickly for a limited period (good for drones and lancers), or even have a limited set of actions after losing power generation such as launching the rest of its missiles. It also just makes ship design a bit nicer, since caps can get pretty big and make placement of weapons a bit awkward.

A railgun capacitor would also be able to run a crew compartment for a very long time, meaning you could fight just fine after losing reactors as long as you have some low-power guns or blast-launched missiles on your ship too.

In an ideal world we could also reuse weapon barrels for different purposes. The barrel of a heavy, rarely-firing railgun could double as a PD railgun by switching to lighter projectiles and using a lower capacitor charge. This might be useful since we could unnecessary barrels to shoot down missiles before the final fleet intercept and close combat using railguns.
