I am trying to build a rail gun to throw a payload of 18.8kg with a bore diameter of 18.4cm but I am frankly getting nowhere. Coil Guns don't seem to work almost at all. I'm wondering if anyone else has had any luck with gun launched payloads and may be able to shed some light on my problems. Many thanks.

Conventional guns tend to work far better with heavy payloads. You can get around 2 km/s and a decent rate of fire for fairly cheaply.

Coilguns work wonders for launching that kind of stuff, you will need a huge capacitor and good luck launching more then 1 or 2rpm, also it sounds counter intuitive but add more coilgun armature and it will go faster

This is the best I could do without knowing the length of your missile. This is near the peak power you can use for this type of railgun without suffering an incredible loss to efficiency.

In order to match the performance of the railgun I posted a coilgun would need 75 kg of Magnetic Metal Glass and would require ~8.5 GJ.

I used to be like that, but then I realized that two ships for the price of one offsets single ship preformance

I make my missiles out of diamond and rubber. About 1-3mm of outer Rubber and and in .5mm of diamond.

Interplanetary diamond missiles are a girl's best friend.
