Update V3. Analysis now includes methods of surviving the interstellar medium. I think all that is needed is a reliable UV laser for ionizing the incoming gas and a magnetic field. The relative velocity of charged particles entering the magnetic field creates stupendous magnetic forces that effectively deflect the particles. What are bubbleguns?

Bubbleguns are weapons that shoot "bubbles", mostly through electromagnetic means. Bubbles are highly pressurized graphene balloons filled with hydrogen which increase in volume by factors of several thousand.

Why bubbles though? Why not accelerate flat disks of a cheaper material, like ice, in front of you?

Why bubbles though? Why not accelerate flat disks of a cheaper material, like ice, in front of you? Travelling at relativistic velocities, save costs. Choose one. The bubbles have a volume and mass advantage. The can alse be shoot out with a coilgun and don't need heavy boosters.

Most definitely not apllicable. The forward thrust arises because: 1. The keel prevents the boat from being pushed laterally 2. The sail is angled more than the ship. The result is that the keel cancels out the force in the direction of the wind and all you're left is the force perpendicular to the wind - which get projected on to the keel axis in the positive (forward) direction. So what you're really doing is using the water to direct your movement. This cannot work without something to push off of. ETA: I just realized it ought to be possible to sail directly into the wind so long as your sail is an airfoil that can produce lift at negative angles of attack. BRB making a viral mystery video ETA2: or maybe not. Need to think this over. The induced drag ought to always work out so that the resulting force vector is no more than perpendicular to the airflow, otherwise we'd be violating the conservation of momentum.

Sailing in a single medium (eg. not a sailboat with wind and water at different velocities) it can be shown through conservation of momentum that any attempt to accelerate towards the wind must cause the wind to accelerate behind the vehicle. I.E. the vehicle must create thrust.

What about a cross between the seeded explosives and the laser propulsion, have laser waystations along the route to continuously accelerate and decelerate via a sail. Not useful for your first trip, but presumably if you're going to the effort of travelling there you have an interest in future travel between that system and your origin system being a bajillion times cheaper and easier. You would need fusion power at any scale for it to be a really long term thing that doesn't require constant refueling, though. If you had that, you could easily run a laser highway between systems using only a small percentage of the ice in each system's Oort cloud.
