Hey, earlier in the year, I started playing COADE and enthusiastically got 4 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze medal, until the Homecoming mission. Until then, I played each mission by basically doing a single burn that shot me straight from the start to the finish as fast as possible or as economically as possible and this allowed me to break most in-game records. However, with Homecoming, this appears to be a chore, if it’s even possible and I guess it’s time to learn how to burn “right”. My understanding is that you want to make a few burns and not only one, starting with one at the apoapsis to get out of orbit and then do the other burns far away from any other objects, or something? My understanding of how and when to burn is spotty, especially when it comes to things like “ideal launch windows” and stuff. How would you complete Homecoming with a Large Methane Tanker?
I’ve completed it once and that time I burned 100 m/s away from Themis, then did a big burn to send me towards Mars, corrected half-way, and finally I used the “join” command, which burned like 10 km/s right there. It feels like I could have saved dV if I burned manually further away from Mars and it feet like luck that I joined.
Edit: I managed to do it again, but whether "joining" is going to cost me 100+ km/s or 20 km/s seems completely random. And most of the time, the "join" command shows up several weeks after passing the station, requiring a 180 degree turn and about 180 km/s at that. This time, I managed to match the orbit of the station, which is an option that nearly never shows up. Once that is done, joining the station is as easy as in the tutorial missions. Still feels random.
Edit 2: Also, in the Lagrange Point Graveyard, the very best I can possibly do is 2 months, 2 days, or 12.8 km/s. I suspect this is also because I'm missing something.
