Unless I've completely missed something, there currently is no option for having a flare ignite some distance from the ship. Admittedly this would only be useful for non terawatt heat signature ships. With especially short burning flares, this can be an issue, especially with reasonably sized nukes, considering they only get a few meters away before burning out. It'd be nice to either manually activate the flare, or have them set on timers before they ignite. Preferably both.

That's the norm now? Fuck me.
One method of flare use is to launch a flare drone that stays with the fleet accelerates at incoming missiles while popping flares. About last November someone made something called Sunspotter that seemed to be doing this (I only saw it in a Steam screenshot, no context provided). The flares can apparently have a lower output due to their proximity making them look bigger/hotter to the missiles (afaik, haven't tested, but someone talked about experiencing this when using small reactors as decoys). Currently with my <10MW heat ships I'm interested in developing things like this, but so many ideas, so little time.
