This isn't necessarily a challenge; mainly I'd like to see what people come up with when I say 'build a training cruiser'. As something of a followup to the fleet doctrine thread, the goal here is to design a ship that would prepare recruits for operating the ships of your fleet. Ergo, your training craft should be a microcosm of all the systems present across your 'real' ships. For example, the Katori pictured above has all the hallmarks of Japanese cruisers of the period - guns (namely the older 5.5" that was easier for Asian sailors of smaller stature to handle when loading), AA artillery including both automatic mounts and a high-angle 5" turret, torpedoes, and even aircraft handling equipment, all on something only a little bigger than a destroyer. She was even short and wide to minimise seasickness. The diesel propulsion is presumably also easier to work with than steam engines; by analogy, you might want to use combustion rockets in place of NTRs. There is a catch, if you do want to make this a challenge; the training ships should not be able to harm each other. This means high protection for the crew, and special weapons with as low penetration as possible. I'm unsure how feasible it is, but ideally there should be some balance between the training weapons being representative of the real thing while remaining harmless. For lasers this is very easy, just reduce the power input and remove the doublers, but trying to make something like a brimstone missile harmless is probably a tall order. These ships should be able to empty their ammo on each other and at most knock out a turret, radiator, or engine — nothing internal. You should of course include extra sets of redundant radiators (some of which would in theory remain retracted unless needed). Depending on how your fleet operates, this could be quite difficult to design for; feel free to use regular explosives in place of nukes. There is no hard cost limit but it shouldn't be more expensive than the ships you normally design. In my case that's about 25Mc.

why would you actually fire weapons at other training ships, using blanks in conventional cannons, some mocked up to look like EM weapons and haveing computers track "Kills" bullets and missiles, with laser pointers. also you would want real weapons in case war breaks out

Then I thought I could present this as a challenge with a twist on the usual premise of optimising something to be as effective as possible within constraints — optimising it to be as non-deadly as possible within the constraint of remaining representative of the real deal. Kinda like the rubber gun thread. This challenge also makes kinetic armour relevant, which it sadly isn't in the meta.

You know i was wondering why the Katori was such a piece of shit in world of warships, now i know!

If you want a ship demonstrating a wide range of weapons, I'm always reminded of the stock gunship.

Im thinking that they would run planet bound turrets and weapon systems. Piloting and ships systems could be accomplished on smaller ships.

Hmm, maybe we should make a challenge: the strongest non-lethal cannon!
Make a cannon (conventional, rail, coil.) that can deliver as much energy as possible without piercing a corvette armor!

A cannon that fires a giant slow moving rubber ball that bounces off the target? What if it kills the target's crew by causing the target to spin rapidly...

I had a guest user in the rubber bullet gun thread who made something powerful and explicitly harmless against pretty much everything. I think it was a 2km/s shot firing a 120 kg rubber ball.
