Hey everybody im back after a short break. So with the addition of the new VLS launchers i set about finally fixing/upgrading my stuff. In the process is built one the better super cheap micro missiles ive had yet. The ITANO MKIII and ITANO MKIV both costing no more than 15 or 17 credits max(im sure someone has a 99 cent micro missile by now). Thing is thanks to finally having a fast enough acceleration and turnabout time i realised something interesting that occurs after doing some tests. As you can see from the following:
A
B
I had originally envisioned the ITANO warheads as zooming in to burst into flak. But then even the unarmed version showed something quite interesting! The micro missile swarm effectively scrambles incoming missile formations. Now the enemy missiles do not actually "re-target" my micro's the AI seems to understand that if they do not move the missiles path will quickly be blocked and intercepted by the micro swarm. This causes them to panic. Now my ITANO MKIII only has a flight time of seven seconds, but the point is even against 100+ missiles the same problem for enemy missiles occurs: As their vector becomes cluttered with micro's and their own dodge attempting brothers they loose a good 7-13 seconds of vital approach time(Per 20 missile swarm). Now in this time, should you have say long range railgun CIWS, this would give them a few more critical seconds to shoot down the incoming round, while also forcing many warheads to turn showing broadside an thus a bigger target. SO Even without a payload or warhead the micro missiles can effectively block and scramble 10x+ their number for less than the cost of one stock flak missile.
As a secondary occurrence of VLS testing this occurred my launchers are still quite powerful even when tuned down to 1g of explosive. In another test i noticed i had a missile swarm accidentally dumped into space on random vectors more or less facing the enemy. So then i thought"wait a minute, if we took ALL these missiles and told them to intercept and some point or another, the usually proficient at dodging EVASIVE enemy AI might do something neat". Sure enough i was right. The enemy AI seems to deal very well with one or two fleets and a handful of nice round 20-30sh missile and drone packages. But sporadically dumping dozens of rounds(which are all super cheap once again) and commuting them to a kind of 360 guaranteed intercept on the target absolutely overwhelms the enemy AI. Now most of these intercepts are a single throwaway missile, but hidden in the bunch are a few dozen odd missiles which are actually MIRV anti ship salvo's. This means you can effectively chorale enemy ships into an intercept they cant dodge by flooding their vectors with incoming pings.
