I went ahead and bought a 3d printer last week, so naturally I had to try printing my Blender model of the stock Gunship. The one on the left was printed all at once, the one on the right was printed in pieces and then superglued together. My printer isn't well optimised so there's a lot of stringing and banding and whatnot, but it was still pretty cool being able to hold a CoaDE ship in my hand. If anyone wants to try it for themselves, here is the .stl file I used.

Which type of the 3D printer did you use?

Can't believe someone really get it done! Awesome! If you can paint these radiators... EDIT: it should be paint...

Which type of the 3D printer did you use? A Monoprice MP Select Mini, basically the cheapest on the market right now.

How long it took to print a gunship BTW? xenophon13 Around two and a half hours, as I recall.

Should we see how long it lasts under a 100MW laser :v

Nice little gunship there. Though, how did you get the radiators to print? I know from 3d printers I've seen that straight horizontal overhangs like those on the radiators are very hard to print, so it's remarkable how well they came out.
EDIT: never mind, noticed supports

Nice, I should try printing some of my ships too. I have a self-built RepRap which can print objects up to 25x25x22cm. By changing the filament in mid-print I can also print in more than one color... perhaps I'll give it some glowing orange patches.

Better idea, see if it can print the radiators so that they're "glowing" but the rest of the hull isn't.

you can use Acetone to smooth it out a bit and remove some of the stringy bits.

Hmmm... since CoaDE gives, in the export file, all the parameters of each part, and since from those parameters (and knowing how the parts are defined) you can calculate the actual shape of it... would it be possible to make a program that, for a given CoaDE export file, automagically generates a 3D model of that ship/part?

To my knowledge, ships (and pretty much everything else too) are procedurally generated by the game, so CDE itself is already that program to a some extent.

Yeah, would just need an interface really to export a ship not just as a .txt, but as a 3D model file. Though, regarding the scale and such, printing would likely only be feasible for sensible ships - not for laserstars with radiators that go out 100s of km.
