I was thinking about the efficiency of coil guns and realized that the efficiency of a coil decreases with length of the coil, as the magnetic fields lose strength over distance. The solution I came up with to this problem, is to use single turn coils that pulse just before the armature passes through. Coincidently, this also seems to mostly solve the problem of reduced acceleration time for multistaged coilguns. One would simply reduce pulse length as the projectile accelerates.
Edit: To formulate the question I only implied: does anyone know if my this would be more efficient?
